Winding Up For Season!

Posted

We’re back and more sparkly than ever! The shop was in dire need of a facelift. After a little back and forth over the choice of wall color, poor Dad admitted defeat and let me complete my vision. The inspiration was a more feminine and peaceful coastal vibe. A little paint goes a long way, and now the brand-new inventory has a place to shine. New pieces are already arriving and the front window display is filling up. Shout out to Gratkowski Painting for their excellent work and completing the project in time for us to reopen. Thank you!

Dad’s article about the olden days at the Harbor Goldsmith was well received. I would like to mention that a stock photo was used for the bikini picture and that it was not me! It’s funny to think back to the 90s and how different everything was. The island was sleepier when the family business was in its beginning stages. At that time, Dad was in his 40s. I’m in my 40s now and I hate how old that makes him! I’m very lucky he did all the hard work establishing his good name. I am determined to preserve and honor it.

We reopened to a wonderful reception of loyal local clientele. The first day was a strong retail sales day, tons of repairs and watch batteries and lots of custom jewelry inquiries. We are preparing for another strong season. Summer is always a nice break, but it can get kind of monotonous and dull. We welcome the hustle and bustle of snowbird season.

Let’s talk about repairs! The bulk of our time spent at the counter is spent on repair consultations. We are more than happy to help you keep your favorite pieces in working order. Loyal readers are diligent about prong inspections and regular cleanings. A few of you are notoriously hard on your jewelry and have achieved “Frequent Flyer” status. You know who you are! We’re here to help. Don’t experience a catastrophic jewelry loss. Be proactive with inspections; it’s not foolproof, but it helps.

Dad has been sojourning in Mallorca for the last month. I’ve left him alone to enjoy his break before season hits. Little does he know, I’ve saved up a few maintenance issues around the shop for him to tend to. He cringes every time he hears me call his name. “Dad, this broke! Fix it!”

He also has quite the reputation for being the local go-to guy for all things broken or misfit. Lamps, metal purse straps, shoe buckles, statues, binoculars, eyeglasses, some costume jewelry, and even a computer circuit board: you name it and someone has handed it to me pleading for Dad to try. Here’s the bottom line on these unusual repairs: they’re out of scope for our work. The two full-time bench jewelers are inundated with fine jewelry repairs. On occasion, I will accept something unusual with the understanding that we will look at it on our own time as a favor. If Dad happens to pop into town and has a minute here or there and wants to try to help, great. These kinds of things are not a rush and we reserve the right to decline. (Circuit board guy was just in the wrong store.)

It’s October; fall is upon us. Traffic will pick up, and our workload will quadruple. Get your projects going now for a smooth delivery process by Christmas. Custom takes time; plan now!
