A Quiet August, a Big September

Posted

As summer winds down, an almost eerie calm settles over Marco Island. Kids are back in school, parking lots are finally empty, and the heat still has its grip. For local business owners, this is the deep breath before season hits.

We’re Taking a Short Break

Harbor Goldsmith is now closed through Monday, September 7. We reopen Tuesday, September 9, the day after Labor Day, with a refreshed showroom. We’ve planned a small renovation that we think will make a big impact, and we can’t wait to show you.

Summer Stories That Stayed With Us

The quieter months let us focus on the work that matters most: repairs and custom pieces that carry real meaning. A few projects from this summer reminded me why I love this work.

Close to the Heart

A longtime customer brought in heirloom pieces after her mother passed away. From her parents’ wedding bands, we recovered five natural diamonds — a full carat in total. We designed a simple, elegant pendant she can wear every day. When she put it on for the first time, she teared up. I did too. That’s the honor of this job. I featured her beautiful new treasure in this article.

A Family Legacy, 20 Years Later

Another customer brought in the anniversary bands my father made here 20 years ago. They’d earned every scratch. While I was pricing a remake, her husband quietly asked if she might like something new for their 40th anniversary. So my father crafted their 20th, and now I’m making their 40th. That kind of continuity is why I get out of bed every morning. I hope I’m here for their 60th.

Honoring What Remains

We often help widows and widowers repurpose both wedding bands. Sometimes we gently shape one into a heart and add a bail. Sometimes we join the two rings to wear on a chain. These pieces are worn close to the heart, every day. Yes, there are happy tears in the showroom. It’s part of the work.

A Note on Redesigns and Rhodium

Many people inherit jewelry that isn’t quite their style. We can often reset stones or change the metal color, but labor costs have risen — especially for tiny melee diamonds. The cost of resetting 200 small stones can exceed the value of the piece.

When a full redesign isn’t practical, we’ll suggest a professional deep clean, polish, and rhodium plating. Rhodium brightens white gold or can turn yellow gold white for pieces worn occasionally. It does wear off over time, fastest on rings, slower on earrings and pendants. Chains require industrial equipment we don’t have in-house, unfortunately.

See You in September

Thank you for a productive, meaningful summer. We’re taking a brief rest, then we’re back September 8th with a new look and the same heart.

Have a safe, quiet end of August. We’ll see you after Labor Day.
