The Rotary Club of Marco Island Sunrise recently welcomed Heather Otis, Curator of Collections for the Marco Island Historical Society, as part of its popular “Wake Up to Rotary Speaker Series.” Joining her was Pat Rutledge, Chief Executive Officer of the Marco Island Historical Society. Together, they presented an engaging and informative program, “Safeguarding Our Story: The Collections That Preserve Marco Island’s History.”
Otis provided members and guests with a behind-the-scenes look at the vital work of preserving and protecting Marco Island’s historical record through the Society’s extensive collections program. Her presentation highlighted the museum’s role as the Island’s only repository dedicated to preserving its physical history and showcased the careful processes involved in collecting, researching, cataloging, preserving, and making historical artifacts accessible to the public. Attendees learned that the Marco Island Historical Society’s collections contain more than 49,000 items, including archaeological artifacts, photographs, audiovisual materials, textiles, documents, archives, artwork, and historical objects that help tell the story of Marco Island’s rich and evolving history. Otis explained that these collections serve purposes far beyond museum exhibits. Historical materials support research, educational programming, publications, presentations, family history projects, and community outreach efforts. She noted that the collections are available to the public for research by appointment and are increasingly accessible through online resources.
The presentation also highlighted the Society’s plans to expand storage capacity through the installation of high-density mobile shelving, ensuring that Marco Island’s historical record can continue to grow and be preserved for future generations. The project reflects the Society’s commitment to maintaining a living collection that continues to tell the story of the island as new chapters are written. “The collections of the Marco Island Historical Society are tangible connections to the people, places, and events that have shaped our community,” said Pat Rutledge, Chief Executive Officer of the Marco Island Historical Society. “Our goal is simple: to ensure that Marco Island never runs out of room for its history.”
Otis emphasized that preserving history is an ongoing responsibility, as new stories and artifacts continue to emerge and enrich the community’s shared heritage. Through the stewardship of its collections, the Marco Island Historical Society ensures that Marco Island’s history remains a living record for generations to come.
“The work being done by the Marco Island Historical Society is invaluable,” shared Evelyn Rossetti-Ryan, President of Rotary Club of Marco Island Sunrise. “Heather and Pat provided a fascinating look behind the scenes at the dedication, expertise, and care required to preserve the history of our island and make it available for current and future generations.
