McCann’s Deserved Better
As a former 22-year resident and retired attorney, I was deeply troubled to learn of the recent departure of Ruth and Dennis McCann from MICA.
I served on MICA’s Board, including six years as President. Ruth served as MICA’s Executive Director for 34 years and Dennis as Beach Manager for 30. I saw firsthand their dedication to MICA and Residents Beach. They helped transform a mediocre beach with a deteriorating pavilion into today’s gem. They guided MICA and the beach through multiple hurricanes, reconstruction, and countless other challenges.
What happened at the end of their long service to MICA is, in my opinion, deeply disappointing.
They resigned following months of serious difficulties with a MICA Board member and because their concerns were not addressed. The Board’s handling of their departure, who together gave more than six decades of service to MICA, deserves the attention of MICA’s members.
I am concerned about MICA’s future. In my opinion, MICA would benefit from new leadership. The current Board members should consider stepping aside and allowing the members to elect directors committed to preserving the reputation of MICA. Otherwise, the members will have the opportunity to make their own judgment when the next election is held.
Ruth and Dennis gave an extraordinary portion of their lives to MICA and the residents. Whatever disagreements may have occurred at the end, their years of dedicated service deserved recognition, gratitude, and respect, and at the very least a thank you from the Board.
