Trump Accounts Update: What Families Need to Know Part 1

Posted

I recently enrolled my daughter in a Trump Account, and it seemed like the perfect opportunity to provide an update. The enrollment process is now much clearer, accounts can be funded, and several new features have been rolled out that make these accounts easier for families to use.

Accounts Are Now Live

The biggest development is that Trump Accounts can now be opened and funded.

Currently, accounts must be opened directly through the U.S. Treasury rather than through private financial firms. The enrollment process is available through the official website and app:

https://trumpaccounts.gov/

Personally, I was able to open and fund my daughter's account in less than ten minutes.

Government Contribution for Eligible Children

Children born between 2025 and 2028 are eligible for a one-time $1,000 government contribution.

After the account is opened and the election is completed, it may take up to four weeks for the government contribution to appear in the account.

New Funding and Contribution Features

Parents, grandparents, family members, and friends can collectively contribute up to $5,000 per child each year using after-tax dollars.

The app includes a feature that allows account owners to share a QR code with family and friends, making contributions simple and convenient. Contributors can also view the remaining annual contribution limit before making a contribution.

Another welcome addition is the ability to establish recurring contributions directly within the app, making automatic investing easier than ever.

Employer Contributions

One of the most overlooked features of Trump Accounts is the potential for employer contributions.

Employers and certain charitable organizations may contribute up to $2,500 annually per eligible child. These contributions count towards the annual contribution limit but are excluded from the employee's taxable income.

It may be worthwhile to ask your HR department whether they plan to offer this benefit.

Automatic Investing

One of the simplest aspects of the program is the investment process.

All contributions are automatically invested in SPYM, an index fund that tracks the S&P 500. Families do not need to choose investments or build a portfolio themselves.

For many parents and grandparents, this removes the stress of deciding how to invest the funds.

Funding the Account

I found this part surprisingly easy.

You can fund the account by:

  • Linking a bank account
  • Using a debit card
  • Potentially using Apple Pay after connecting a debit card

In my experience, contributions were reflected almost immediately, and investments were purchased the following business day.

The entire process felt more like using a modern financial app than interacting with a government program.

Opening an Account: A Simple Checklist

If you're considering opening a Trump Account, here are a few steps to take:

  1. Add IRS Form 4547 to your tax checklist or enroll through the official app.
  2. Have your child's Social Security number available.
  3. Visit TrumpAccounts.gov and review the enrollment instructions.
  4. Ask your employer whether contributions are available.
  5. Consider how the account fits alongside your existing savings strategy, including 529 plans and Roth IRAs.

Final Thoughts

After opening my daughter's account, my biggest takeaway is how straightforward the process has become. The combination of automatic investing, easy funding options, family contribution features, and the potential government seed contribution makes this a compelling option for many families.

More importantly, it creates an opportunity to start teaching children about investing, ownership, and the power of compounding from an early age.

I'm here to make the process as easy as possible. If you have any questions or need help opening or setting up your Trump account, please don't hesitate to call, email, or contact me directly.
