As a thirty-one year old resident of Marco Island, I see division at play on the island that pits council members, and neighbors, against each other: the businesses vs. the residents. Growth and development are widespread across Florida, and I am grateful that Marco Island is nearing build-out. As full-time residents and property owners on Marco Island, we enjoy frequenting many of the businesses on Marco. We are especially grateful for those businesses that participate in the Marco Island Civic Association (MICA) discount for Residents’ Beach Members. As two teachers, the discount helps to make many establishments affordable for us. In addition, we’ve been grateful to see Domino’s Pizza and, soon, Jersey Mike’s join the island, and hope to see a couple more fast food restaurants in the future. I would encourage more businesses to explore offering a MICA discount as well.
Both businesses and residents pay taxes. I’m grateful that our City Council consists of voices that represent both. However, I am disappointed to see the council continue to be unable to select their seventh member through the timeline and process provided in the city charter. I am appalled that some of the current council members, and residents, seek to go against the advice of the city attorney and manager, demanding to hold a special election. It’s time to see the beauty of an island that is pro-resident AND pro-business, finding harmony through listening and compromise. May the January 21st council meeting bring compromise, harmony, and legal compliance.
