Before jumping to a convenient blame on Marco Island canal water quality, I would first agree that there are most likely issues with our canals. Having served on City Council (2008 - 2012), we knew that there were issues due to the massive use of unmaintained septic systems. Marco has a long history of septic tank pollution, starting with the beginning development prior to my first visit in 1965. While I would not recommend drinking the re-use water, I would look to the leeching into the canals of effluents from past septic as a more major cause, and I would also look into testing the quality of the re-use water being used. Use of re-use has an economic benefit, and I would weigh the benefits carefully. Maybe enhancing the filtering system would be really beneficial if needed.
