In the past week, 3 green and white FDOT "Alligator Alcatraz" directional signs were posted around the intersection of US 41 and SR 29.
Who at FDOT approved the design of these signs?
And who approved the signs' location at US 41 and SR 29?
The signs are located just a few miles from the rural communities of Everglades City and Chokolosee, which have a combined population of less than 800 people. SR 29 is the only road into and out of Everglades City and Chokoloskee, and there is no reason for traffic related to Alligator Alcatraz to drive here. Why then is the direction to Alligator Alcatraz being advertised as people enter and leave our community? Is it to let tourists who visit our community know how to get to Alligator Alcatraz? Is Alligator Alcatraz a tourist destination? I emphatically say no.
The economies of Everglades City and Chokoloskee rely almost exclusively on tourism related to Everglades National Park and surrounding natural areas, and these signs diminish the natural beauty that we are trying to promote. They are a detriment to our image and convey a negative message from Florida to our tourists. I am a full-time resident of Everglades City, and I am requesting that these signs be removed.
