The last edition of the Coastal Breeze once again highlighted problems with our canal water quality, raised by the Canal Science Symposium and Sand Dollar Island and Tigertail wildlife in the Sea Turtle Report by Maria Lamb. Both can be partially addressed through the reopening of the Clam Bay canal, a waterway direct from Clam Bay across county land in NW Marco, bisecting the Tigertail lagoon, to the Gulf. This would greatly increase the passage of Gulf water into these canals that now are one to three miles from the nearest outlet and in the worst shape. This would increase oxygen, benefit aquatic life, reduce gas and emissions for boats by reducing their transit time to the Gulf and reduce boat traffic on the Big Marco River. This would also make Tigertail Lagoon more desirable and increase recreational opportunities. Ms. Lamb’s article highlighted the Groundhog Day scenario taking place at the Lagoon and Sand Dollar Island with constant rebuilding of the berm which harms turtles and nesting birds and costs the taxpayer a bundle. An opening at the southern end of the lagoon will allow for flushing and better conditions for both aquatic life and recreation. This would allow the community to stop fighting nature and instead work with it to better our environment and lives.
