On July 7th, City Council Chair Brechnitz took the unprecedented and irresponsible step of publicly alleging wrongdoing in the City Audit without verified evidence and demanding the resignation of City Manager Mike McNees. To their credit, the rest of the Council rejected this demand and scheduled a public meeting with the Auditor to better understand the findings.
Instead of waiting for facts, Chair Brechnitz doubled down in a Coastal Breeze guest commentary, again repeating unproven claims. Then, on July 14 - before the public meeting - he privately pressured Mr. McNees to resign. Mr. McNees did so under duress. Later that same day, at a special Council meeting, Chair Brechnitz revealed McNees’ resignation without informing or consulting his fellow Councilors.
This behavior was not only shocking and unprofessional - it was damaging. It contributed directly to the resignations of both Manager McNees and Finance Manager Polanco, both of whom served this city with dedication. These reckless actions undermined morale across City staff and disrespected the authority and unity of the full Council.
Chair Brechnitz later apologized for the tone of his commentary. But apologies cannot undo the harm already caused.
Such unilateral, inappropriate conduct has no place in public service. Chair Brechnitz should step down as Chair - and from City Council entirely. Our city deserves steady, responsible leadership grounded in facts, not political theatrics.
