Special Election Needed

Posted

The Marco Island City Council is currently at an impasse, leaving a critical seat vacant. This  situation demands a solution that is both practical and reflective of our democratic values. I  believe the answer lies in calling a special election to resolve this deadlock and allow the voters  of Marco Island to decide.

A special election is not just an option—it’s the fairest and most transparent path forward. Some  argue that the Council lacks the authority to take this step, but that perspective misinterprets the  intent of our City Charter. The Charter grants the Council broad powers to act in the city’s best  interests and emphasizes that its provisions should be liberally construed in favor of the city. It  doesn’t need to outline every specific scenario for us to understand our duty: when the usual  process of appointment fails, we must find alternative solutions that serve the people.

Imagine a group of chefs in a kitchen who refuse to cook because they can’t agree on what to  make. Meanwhile, the diners are left hungry and waiting. Would we accept this? Of course not.  We would demand that meals get prepared and served. The Council is like that kitchen right now,  and it’s our responsibility to make sure the people of Marco Island are served. A special election  is the menu we need to move forward.

It’s also important to acknowledge that the City Attorney has expressed an opinion suggesting  the Charter doesn’t explicitly allow for a special election in this case. But that’s exactly what it is —an opinion. The Charter does not prohibit a special election, and the absence of a restriction  reinforces our authority to act. I sincerely believe no judge would deny the people of Marco  Island their voice under these circumstances.

I also want to recognize and respect the convictions of those who oppose this approach. Standing  up for one’s beliefs is admirable, even when we disagree. However, part of being a leader is  accountability, and the most effective way to ensure accountability is to let the voters decide. My  duty is to the residents of Marco Island, and with their trust, I will continue to serve them.

To resolve this situation and avoid unnecessary delays, I urge the City Attorney to prepare a  temporary emergency resolution authorizing a special election. Additionally, I am requesting the  preparation of an amendment to our City Charter to mandate a special election in the event of  similar deadlocks in the future. These actions will not only address our immediate challenges but  also safeguard our city against such predicaments moving forward.

This isn’t about winning or losing—it’s about doing what’s right. A special election respects  democracy, restores functionality to the Council, and honors the will of the people. I call on my  colleagues and our community to support this effort and move Marco Island forward together.

Sincerely,
Stephen Gray
