Over the past few months, the Marco Island City Council has had four open-to-the-public Budget Workshops with detailed presentations by each City Department on their operating and capital needs.
As a result of these workshops, the City Council is considering adjusting the millage rate up for the first time in years. I want to take a moment to discuss not only why I'm considering this millage increase, but why I feel it is necessary:
First, remember that property tax rates on Marco have declined every year since 2016. This change would bring them from their current level (1.240 mills) to their fourth lowest level ever (1.668 mills). In plain dollars and cents, that's about 65 cents per day more on a house valued at $500,000, or $1.21 per day on a house valued at $1 million. And remember, your taxable value is typically less than your market value. In fact, 75% of Marco Island households are assessed at less than $1 million.
With this change, we'll not only be able to meet the needs of our City's operating expenses but invest in crucial projects necessary for our growth as a community. For example, our infrastructure needs repairs that have been delayed for far too long. If passed, this proposal would bring $4.5 million in new revenue dedicated to road resurfacing, swale maintenance, bridge rehabilitation, and more. We cannot afford to keep kicking the can down the road on these items.
This change is also fiscally responsible - it will help us rebuild vital reserve funds that we need in the event of an emergency, such as a hurricane or other natural disaster.
It is long past time to make meaningful investments in our City's future while preserving our status as a low-tax municipality.
Please do not hesitate to reach out with questions or concerns.
