Response to Noise is Normal

A welcome letter to the editor appeared last week from Anna Horrigan,“Noise is Normal.” Many, many island residents agree with her assessment and comments that children and noise are part of a healthy community, though a vocal minority remains focused on creating unreasonable additional subjective noise regulations. I agree and speak for others when we urge City leaders to adopt data based, measurable criteria. The City Police Dept via your paper report on noise complaint calls, and which had any merit. The vast majority are meritless, and the valid ones are handled by the police. Mrs. Horrigan makes the valid and obvious point that various aspects of the proposed stricter noise regulations will inevitably be used by a minority to harass neighboring property owners, residents, and renters. The police have many roles in society and on our island, and we’re grateful for their role in the noise matters.
