Marco Island’s November 17 reorganization vote is far more than routine. It is a test of whether this Council can put principle above politics.
Chairman Erik Brechnitz has been right all along. He was the first to sound the alarm on the audit failures and management breakdowns that others downplayed. He saw what was coming and acted when it mattered. That is leadership.
Erik’s commitment to Marco Island is difficult to match. He has endured personal attacks and health challenges, yet continues to put this city before friendships, convenience, and even himself. His work has never been about popularity, only accountability and integrity.
When Erik was absent, Vice Chair Stephen Gray filled the chair with calm professionalism and fairness. His steady demeanor reflects the civility residents expect from their elected leaders. Together, this team has provided stability, transparency, and courage during one of the most difficult periods in city history.
Now is not the time for politics or power plays. The responsible action is to reappoint ChairmanBrechnitz and Vice Chair Gray unanimously. Anything less would appear petty and self-serving.
Marco Island deserves unity and mature leadership. These two have earned it. The Council should show the same commitment to the city that they have shown to its people.
