Public Dollars Require Public Accountability

Posted

Collier County is considering moving destination marketing — funded by Tourist Development Tax revenue — to a nonprofit organization. MICA has raised legitimate questions about transparency, accountability, and Marco Island's representation in that shift. I share those concerns. Where I differ is on the fix.

Marco Island deserves direct representation on any organization making decisions about our tourism economy — specifically, a guaranteed City seat held by the City Manager or the City Manager's designee. That ensures Marco Island's government has a continuing institutional voice at the table.

If Marco receives additional seats, they should be filled by qualified Marco Island residents appointed by the City Council — not permanently assigned to MICA or any other private organization. MICA, the Chamber of Commerce, environmental groups, business leaders, and individual residents should all be free to recommend candidates. If multiple seats are available, the Council should seek complementary experience in areas such as tourism, business, environmental stewardship, finance, and community affairs.

I'm open to the nonprofit model. Private-sector expertise can sharpen destination marketing, and tourism businesses deserve a real voice in how it's done. But this is public money. The County must retain meaningful oversight: transparent budgets, open governance, conflict-of-interest protections, independent audits, and measurable performance standards.

The principle is simple. Industry should bring expertise. Residents should have a voice. Marco should have direct representation. And elected government must stay accountable for public dollars.

The City Council and Collier County Commission are holding a Joint Workshop on this at City Hall at 1:00 PM on August 27 — a good chance for residents to weigh in before any decision is made.
