Dialogue regarding Marco Island’s canal water quality reminds me of the movie Groundhog Day. Conversations go on and on with no resolution. The City has publicly acknowledged that our waters are impaired. It’s time to do something about our declining water quality.
Many may not see our water quality as an issue. If we destroy our waters, the wildlife will diminish more than it already has. Tourism will decline and property values will plummet. Our fish need oxygen. Birds, dolphins, and other wildlife are leaving due to polluted canals.
The Committee to Improve the Quality of Marco Island Reuse Water, Inc. is presently circulating a petition for registered voters to sign. While the PAC’sname is lengthy, our goal is simple. Upgrade the sewage treatment plant to Advanced Wastewater Treatment (AWT). There is presently technology that will further remove pollutants from our reuse water. Reuse water that has partially treated human waste is now used on our golf courses and condominium complexes. This polluted reuse water makes its way into our canals and feeds algal blooms.
We need 10% of the voting population to sign petitions to get a referendum on the ballot. Let Marco Island voters decide. You can sign the petition on the Right Club of South Collier Website, www.rcscc.us under “Hot Topics.”
Let’s join other Cities like Tampa Bay and Naples, who have Advanced Wastewater Treatment (AWT). Please sign the petition and be a part of a solution.
