After watching the July 7 council meeting and then spending five hours live streaming the July 14 session, I feel compelled to speak out. Chair Brechnitz displayed an alarming lack of leadership. His decision to blindside fellow council members with a call to fire City Manager Mike McNees - based on incorrect interpretations of the yearly audit - was reckless and irresponsible.
Chair Brechnitz should have waited for the full review with the new auditing firm, which ultimately found no abuse or fraud. Any procedural issues could - and should - have been addressed in a private session, with immediate attention and the opportunity to correct flaws in the city’s procedures. The audit findings clearly did not justify dismissal.
Instead, Brechnitz chose to escalate the issue publicly, then doubled down in an op-ed that repeated unverified allegations. This conduct reveals a disturbing lack of integrity and sound judgment, and it needlessly deepened divisions within our community and on our Council.
Effective leaders prioritize facts, fairness, and resolution. While I appreciate that ChairmanBrechnitz eventually apologized and that four of the seven councilors rightly rejected McNees’ resignation, trust in council leadership has again been shaken.
Marco Island deserves steady, responsible leadership grounded in truth - not rash theatrics. For the good of our city, perhaps it’s time for Mr. Brechnitz to step down as Chair and from the council.
