Honor Integrity, Not Harassment

Posted

We write as women privileged to call Bonita Schwan our dear friend for more than 50 years.

We are shocked and saddened by reports of harassment and vicious personal attacks directed toward Bonita. The extent of the hostility and apparent mob mentality are appalling. It is painful to watch someone we have loved for most of our lives subjected to such treatment.

Throughout our friendship, Bonita has exemplified integrity, honesty, generosity, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to doing what is right. These are qualities we have witnessed firsthand.

We have visited Bonita on Marco Island and come to share her affection for this beautiful community. We understand why, despite our attempts to dissuade her, she has devoted herself to serving its residents.

Public service invites differing opinions and spirited debate. But surely we can disagree without diminishing another’s dignity. Disagreement is acceptable; hate-filled intimidation is not.

We write not to engage in politics, but out of love, admiration, and abiding esteem for a woman whose character we know beyond question.

We respectfully call upon the Marco Island City Council and community to stand united in unequivocally condemning these abuses and taking appropriate steps to ensure Bonita, and every council member, can serve without fear of harassment or intimidation.

Just a reminder that behind every public official is a human being deserving of dignity, kindness, and respect.
