Fines Need to be Collected

Posted

The city of Marco Island needs to eliminate the cavalier attitude it has in regards to the collection of fines for code violations or any violation of our Marco Island laws. If I get a traffic fine, I pay it and I learn to be more careful driving. If I get a library fine, I pay it and learn not to violate the library rules again.
Fines and the enforcement and paying of fines have a purpose. It encourages the public to follow our laws and rules.
Are we in Marco Island so wealthy that we don’t have an area in the budget where we could put the money from the collection of fines?
The finance director of Marco Island recently stated that there are 1.6 million dollars in fine invoices and only $12,000 collected. WHY? I believe Marco Island could use that 1.6 million dollars for something. Good record keeping and having
An excellent collection process is desperately needed.
Remember, fines serve a purpose. Fines make people follow our laws and rules. Fines must be collected and properly documented and returned to the Marco Island city budget. Deals to reduce fines should be very limited and done by committee in only extreme circumstances.
If a fine is issued in Marco Island, it should be paid.
