I am writing to request clarification regarding the decision to reconstruct the airnasium (basketball court) at Mackle Park during the height of the season.
Who in the City is responsible for making the decision to schedule this project between January and March? Were alternative start dates considered or included in the contract?
The timing has significantly impacted the bocce courts and, as a result, the bocce league season, which traditionally runs from January through March. Over the years, this league has grown from a small group of players to 168 regular participants who rely on these courts.
Additionally, the closure of the airnasium has affected school children, families, and basketball players who regularly use the facility. Management is well aware that Marco Island’s population grows from approximately 18,000 residents off-season to well over 40,000 during season. Despite this, construction was scheduled during the busiest time of year, disrupting activities for residents and visitors alike.
This project should have commenced in April 2025 or April 2026, once peak season concluded. I am requesting a clear explanation of who approved this schedule and why off-season construction was not pursued.
I would appreciate a prompt response.
