Councilor Brechnitz Lack of Professional Conduct and Leadership

Posted

I would like to raise ongoing and serious concerns regarding Councilor Brechnitz’s conduct, performance, and overall fitness to serve on the Marco Island City Council.

At a recent city council meeting, Councilor Brechnitz once again demonstrated a pattern of inappropriate and unprofessional behavior toward city staff. His public outburst and blame-shifting regarding the city’s audit - which he failed to follow up on or even acknowledge was due - was deeply concerning.

In fact according to resolution 23 - 45 from Sept 5, 2023, he is the chair of the audit committee which has not met for over a year. Rather than taking responsibility for his oversight, he chose instead to criticize the very staff members who work diligently to keep city operations running smoothly.

These incidents are not isolated. They are part of a troubling pattern of behavior that includes public bullying and ethical breaches, both in and outside of city hall. Many in the community recall the incident involving MIPD when Councilor Brechnitz was found asleep at the wheel—in that instance he tried to bully and use his role to influence the officer and leverage his position to gain favor in the criminal situation.

Compounding these issues is a consistent pattern of forgetfulness. Councilor Brechnitz has repeatedly shown confusion during meetings - forgetting fellow councilors' names, agenda items, and the outcomes of votes. These lapses disrupt the proceedings and raise valid concerns about his ability to fulfill the duties of his office. His physical appearance at meetings, often with visible injuries, further underscores questions about his overall health and capacity to serve effectively.

In addition to these concerns, Brechnitz has repeatedly advocated for actions that are in direct conflict with the laws he took an oath to uphold. This disregard for legal and ethical standards undermines public trust and damages the credibility of the council.

For the sake of our community and the integrity of our local government, I urge Councilor Brechnitz to step down. It is time for leadership that demonstrates accountability, respect for staff, ethics and a commitment to the rule of law.
