The July 14th meeting of the Marco Island City Council showcased the ongoing dysfunction that has emerged since the election of the new councilors. Deb Henry's berating and insulting of Erik Brechnitz was not only appalling but also an embarrassment to herself and her supporters. To chastise anyone during a motion concerning City Manager Mike McNees' resignation was completely inappropriate.
Henry claims she ran for council to “bring the community together,” yet her actions have only served to polarize it. Whether through her attacks on Brechnitz or her inconsistent approach in seeking a seventh councilor, she has fostered division. Though she asserts she representsthe "majority" of voters, she only received 17.42% of the election vote, one percentage point away from losing the election. Obviously, she falls short of that claim. Henry has also made unqualified accusations about Brechnitz's mental state and reading abilities, which are unfounded, insulting, and she is unqualified to judge. Her assertion that he makes at least five mistakes per meeting is a claim I would challenge in a slander suit, should it arise. The standards she alludes to should include maintaining professionalism and decorum during meetings, neither of which we witnessed from her.
In my opinion, Councilor Henry should consider resigning to spare her supporters further embarrassment, as her recent behavior reflects her inability to perform her duties professionally and ethically.
