City Should Audit Municipal Departments

Posted

In the interest of transparency, fiscal responsibility, and long-term sustainability, I urge the City of Marco Island to commission a comprehensive operational audit of its municipal departments, - including the water and sewer utility. This assessment should examine staffing levels, service delivery efficiency, regulatory compliance, and whether current operations meet the evolving needs of our residents and environment.

Given rising infrastructure demands, utility upgrades, and expanding regulatory pressures, now is the time to ensure our government systems are aligned, responsive, and cost-effective. An operational audit would help identify redundancies, uncover opportunities for improvement, and evaluate whether our investments are delivering maximum public benefit.

Cities across Florida have used audits to guide smarter decisions, improve budget transparency, and modernize utility and administrative systems. Marco Island should do the same, particularly as we discuss significant capital upgrades and environmental commitments. Including both utility and city operations ensures a holistic view and a foundation for strategic planning.

This audit should evaluate staffing levels, service delivery, regulatory compliance, and long-term sustainability. With rising service demands and environmental responsibilities - such as nutrient reduction and advanced wastewater treatment - our city must ensure that its operations are efficient, transparent, and aligned with best practices.

Florida municipalities such as Gainesville and Tampa have conducted operational audits to improve financial oversight, utility performance, and service delivery. These audits have helped uncover inefficiencies, strengthen internal controls, and guide strategic planning. Marco Island would benefit from a similar review, especially as it pursues nutrient reduction goals outlined in its 2023 Pollutant Reduction Plan accepted by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.

Including both city and utility operations allows for a holistic understanding of performance and priorities. A citywide operational audit is a proactive step toward strengthening public trust and delivering measurable results.
