March is a time to recognize and honor the achievements of women. On Marco Island, the majority of voters are women over the age of 55, and in a historic moment for our community, three strong women were elected to the Marco Island City Council. This marks the first time in the city’s history that three women are serving on the council simultaneously - a milestone worth celebrating.
Despite this progress, it remains evident that there is a significant disparity in leadership roles within the council. Although women make up the majority of voters on the island, there is a persistent effort to exclude them from city council leadership positions. For more than six years, female council members have been systematically denied opportunities to serve as chair or vice chair. This deliberate exclusion disregards the will of the voters and undermines the principles of fair representation and equality in leadership.
The recent leadership selection process only reinforced these concerns. Instead of a transparent decision, a predetermined outcome was orchestrated behind closed doors. The result was the appointment of individuals whose records and actions raise serious concerns about their ability to lead effectively.
Marco Island deserves better. Our city council should reflect the integrity, fairness, and accountability that the voters expect and deserve. Voters asked for change – not the same old chair.
