The proposed expansion of Rose Marina deserves careful scrutiny by Marco Island residents and public officials.
For many years, waterfront property owners have enjoyed views of Factory Bay that contribute to both the character of our community and the value of surrounding homes. The increasing use of Rose Marina by large cruise vessels raises legitimate concerns about visual impacts, traffic, passenger transportation, parking demands, and compatibility with the surrounding residential area.
Proponents frequently cite economic benefits, yet many residents have observed that cruise passengers typically board buses upon arrival and are transported to attractions elsewhere in Collier County. If the vast majority of passengers are leaving Marco Island shortly after disembarking and spending their tourism dollars elsewhere, then the economic benefit to our city deserves closer examination.
Marco Island residents bear the impacts of increased traffic, commercial activity, and the loss of waterfront views. Before any further expansion is approved, the public should be provided with objective data showing how much spending actually occurs on Marco Island and whether the benefits outweigh the costs imposed on residents and property owners.
Public decisions should be based on facts, transparency, and a full understanding of the consequences for our community.
