Once again the City Council members have been unable to come to a choice for a seventh member. I have a suggestion for ending this continuing chaos.
Despite the city Charter, due to the deadlock, call for a special election. No judge in the United States is going to find against the City no matter who possibly tries to bring a suit. Free elections are the essence of our democracy.
Once seven councilors are seated amend the Charter to make it a law that any elected official running for another office must resign. To replace that person then hold a special election unless the remainder of the vacated office is for six months or less, in which case the six councilors would appoint the seventh member.
Hopefully, these changes would rectify the problem we are currently living with which is a disservice to the voters of Marco Island.
