The City Council’s recent attempts to appoint a seventh councilor have left many Marco Island residents frustrated and disappointed.
I was one of more than 25 applicants for the seat left vacant by Councilor Greg Folley. Over weeks of interviews and deliberations, the Council narrowed the field to two, including me. Yet, the Council deadlocked in a 3-3 vote.
During these meetings, several Councilors showed they were willing to forego their first-choice candidate, one even suggesting a coin toss to remove bias from the selection.
But Councilor Brechnitz suggested a different approach: Eliminate the top candidates and choose from candidates who didn’t make the cut. That failed. One councilor admitted she couldn’t, in good conscience, vote for someone she’d never met.
Why not revisit the two most qualified candidates? one Councilor asked. That failed.
And then, Councilor Brechnitz showed his hand: He accused two of us of being “aligned.” Pressed, he admitted he meant “aligned” with Councilor Palumbo.
Brechnitz said the quiet part out loud: He has a political litmus test. Brechnitz is not looking for a qualified candidate: He seeks “alignment” with him.
Brechnitz’s accusation I lack independence is baseless and insulting. I’ve built a reputation for independence and critical thinking, for standing against undue influence, expressing my own viewpoints and challenging the status quo.
Such behavior discourages qualified individuals from serving in public office. I hope councilors will prioritize qualifications, experience, and the community’s needs over political litmus tests.
