A Question of Values

Posted

Jewish immigrant backgrounds. Their families fled antisemitic violence and poverty in Eastern Europe and built new lives in the United States. Each grew up with stories of persecution and survival. Yet they took those histories in radically different directions.
Bernie Sanders turned his family’s Holocaustscarred past into a lifelong commitment to justice and solidarity. He fights for universal health care, living wages, workers’ rights, and a multiracial democracy in which immigrants and minorities are fully part of the American “we.” His politics say no one should be disposable, whether they’re poor, sick, or newly arrived.
Stephen Miller, by contrast, helped design Muslim bans, family separations, and a web of anti-immigrant policies that treat desperate families as threats to be crushed, not neighbors to be welcomed. He has used his power to narrow who counts as “real” Americans and to harden our government against those who most resemble his own immigrant ancestors.
These two men started from similar roots but embody opposite moral lessons. One drew empathy and universalism from his history. The other drew hierarchy and exclusion.
In this moment of rising authoritarianism and open cruelty, we should be honest about the choice in front of us. Whose life and work reflect your values—Bernie Sanders, who struggles to expand the circle of human concern, or Stephen Miller, who works to police its borders and shrink it?
