A Bad Look at Marco Cemetery

Posted

It began around 1880 as a pioneer burial ground for the Island's earliest fishing families and settlers. It is and has been Marco Island's only cemetery and is located at the corner of West Elkcam and Bald Eagle.

It looks and feels like a scene from a Norman Rockwell painting as you walk its pathway in the quiet of the early morning hours. Two memorials attract your attention. The first is a tall monument rising skyward and marked with the insignias of the US Army, US Navy, US Marine Corps, US Air Force, and the US Coast Guard. It is a tribute to all those who have fought for and died for our Country.

Adjacent is a smaller but more touching monument called the "Christmas Box Angel." A cherubic angel dedicated as a tribute to the children buried in this pastoral small place.

A short distance beyond, I was at the West Elkcam opening where I stepped out beside a big screened construction site hugging this side of the cemetery with an overpowering presence. What cold, callous city fathers allow greedy developers to erect such an abomination in the first place? Next to this small piece of hallowed ground, a Google search reveals we will soon be able to enjoy another drive-through restaurant with room for a retail establishment and office space.

Those who gave permission and those who are building this thing in this location deserve to go to hell with that rolling snowball.
