Verdi’s 19                                                                               Speakeasy 8

First-place Verdi’s pummeled the ball from the outset opening up a 14-0 lead after four innings and coasted from there to defeat Speakeasy in convincing fashion.

Rob Barstow led off the first with a single for Verdi’s, and Jon Thomas followed with a double, the first of three he would have for the game. A Tad Fabian sacrifice fly scored the first run, and a base hit by Jim Sperzel scored run number two. After a Jim O’Toole single, Mike Shone tripled home a pair of runs, and Mike Faria capped the rally with an RBI single to make it 5-0. Three innings later with the lead already extended to 9-0, Verdi’s put another five-spot on the board, with the key hits being a two-run double by Fabian and another RBI base hit by Sperzel to put the game out of reach.

Barstow, Sperzel, and O’Toole led Verdi’s potent 27-hit attack with four hits each, with one of Sperzel’s a triple. Thomas, Fabian, and Shone contributed three hits, Sperzel plated four runs, Fabian and Shone three, and Faria two for the winners.

Speakeasy, who tried to make a game of it late, was led by Brett Bartholomaus with three RBIs, two of which came on a double in the eighth inning to reduce the deficit to 16-8, but that was as close as they would get.

Salty Dog 21                                                                  Nacho Mama’s 11

Salty Dog and Nacho Mama’s were engaged in a tight battle midway through the contest when the Dog went on a rampage, scoring twelve unanswered runs to pull away and gain the win.

Salty Dog came to bat in the sixth inning leading 9-8 when they pushed across three runs, thanks to RBI singles by Tom Polston and Dave Koch, and a sacrifice fly by Ron Lukasevich. The following inning, after two were out, the Dog got an RBI single by manager Mike Schwab, an RBI double by Chip Mathers, a two-run single by Bob Ferreira, and another RBI single by Koch to up the score to 17-8. The Dog added four more insurance runs the following inning, courtesy of RBIs by Brian Ward, Ron Goralski, and Jeff Robinson.

Everyone in the lineup hit safely as part of the 31 hit attack for Salty Dog, led by Koch (four hits, three RBIs), Ferreira (four hits, two RBIs), Brian Alexander (three hits, two RBIs), Robinson (three hits), Polston (four RBIs), and Lukasevich and Bill Krausmann (two RBIs each).

Matt Evangelista topped the Nacho Mama’s hitters with four hits and two RBIs, followed by Bob Masulis (three hits, two RBIs), Chuck Stathopoulos (three hits), Eric Phillips (two-run triple among three RBIs), and manager Todd Rogers (two RBIs).

DaVinci’s 13                                                                       Dolphin Tiki 12

DaVinci’s, after trailing the whole game, came back to take the lead in the eighth inning, then won it in the ninth on a walk-off RBI single by Joe Lazzarotti over Dolphin Tiki.

With DaVinci’s down 11-7 going into the eighth inning, Carl Parker blasted a two-run home run to cut the lead in half. Then after singles by Paul Kramer and Bill Novakovich put runners on the corners, Rick Benedetti singled home a run, and Chris Scherzinger hammered a two-run double to center field to give DaVinci’s their first lead of the game (12-11). Tiki tied it up in the top of the ninth on an RBI base knock by Ron Baden, setting up the game-winning heroics by Lazzarotti in the bottom half.

Parker, Mike Gerace, and Dick Nemmers each banged out three hits for DaVinci’s, and Gerace also collected two RBIs. Bruce Denlinger contributed a triple to the cause.

For the Tiki, Joe Rocco, Ricky Cuevas, Eric Jeanotte, and Gary Revall all slashed three hits. Cuevas, Revall, Dave Mayo, and Sal Tidona each drove in a pair of runs in the contest.

DaVinci’s 14                                                                     Nacho Mama’s 9

DaVinci’s finished strong, scoring the final eight runs to earn the comeback victory over Nacho Mama’s.

DaVinci’s, staring at a 9-6 deficit as they went to bat in the bottom of the seventh, scored three times on a Bruce Denlinger RBI single, a Mike Gerace sacrifice fly, and a Nacho’s error to even the score at 9-all. Then in the decisive eighth, DaVinci’s pushed across five runs. Dave St. Angelo led off with a booming four-bagger to left field. Then, after singles by Carl Parker and Paul Kramer, Bill Novakovich came up big with a two-run base hit, Denlinger delivered again with an RBI single, and Dick Nemmers capped the rally with an RBI base knock to give DaVinci’s a 14-9 advantage.

Parker and Denlinger finished the game with three hits apiece, Gerace knocked in three runs, one on a leadoff home run in the first, and Parker also had two RBIs for DaVinci’s.

Chuck Stathopoulos led the Nacho’s attack with four hits, and manager Todd Rogers and Frank Tedesco each had three. Eric Phillips drove in three runs, two on a double that gave Nacho’s a 6-4 lead in the fifth inning, and Bill Coyle contributed two RBIs in the loss.

Salty Dog 25                                                                        Speakeasy 10

Salty Dog unleashed a furious 37-hit attack as they dominated a shell-shocked Speakeasy team.

The Dog got contributions up and down the lineup as ten players hit safely at least three times, led by Ron Lukasevich with four hits, including a three-run homer and four RBIs, Brian Alexander and Ron Goralski each with four hits and three RBIs, and Brian Ward also with four hits. Other hitting heroes for the Dog included Tom Polston (three hits, four RBIs), Dave Koch (three hits, two RBIs), Chip Mathers (three hits including a lead-off homer), and Bob Ferreira, Dan Gulick, and Jeff Robinson (three hits each).

With the score still a respectable 8-5 Dog lead going into the fifth inning, the Dog pushed across five runs on an RBI double by Alexander, a two-run single by Polston, a sacrifice fly by Bill Krausmann, and an RBI single by Lukasevich to make it 12-5, which set the tone for the remainder of the contest.

Speakeasy was led by Terry Downs (three hits, three RBIs), Mike Galloway (three hits, two RBIs), and Brett Bartholomaus (three hits), but it was not nearly enough as this day belonged to the Dogs.

Verdi’s 22                                                                           Dolphin Tiki 14

Powered by Tad Fabian’s three home run, seven RBI performance, Verdi’s was able to claim the victory over Dolphin Tiki, thereby clinching the regular season title in the Island Division.

The power-hitting outfielder used the whole field as he blasted a three-run shot to left in the first, a two-run bomb to right in the third, and a two-run shot to center in the fifth.

Despite the power display, Verdi’s clung to a slim 10-8 lead in the sixth but scored ten times in the next two innings to put the game on ice. In the sixth, a Nick Jacullo (three hits, two RBIs) RBI single gave Verdi’s an 11-8 lead. A few batters later, Fabian stepped in again with runners on the corners, but Tiki understandably chose to intentionally walk him. However, Verdi’s Jim Sperzel (four RBIs) foiled the strategy as he ripped a three-run triple to center and then scored on an RBI single by Jim O’Toole. Verdi’s followed that up with another five-run inning in the seventh, with the big blow being a two-run triple by Matt Minik (three hits) to make it a 20-9 ballgame.

Rob Barstow, Mike Faria, Dan Harrar, and Mike Compton also contributed three hits to the cause for Verdi’s. Brian Craig punched out three hits and had four RBIs to lead Tiki, manager Ricky Cuevas added three hits and two RBIs, and Joe Rocco hammered a solo homer and had two RBIs in the game.

Nacho Mama’s 20                                                                Dolphin Tiki 9

Matt Evangelista was a one-man wrecking crew as he drove in eight runs leading Nacho Mama’s to the lopsided victory over Dolphin Tiki.

The hard-hitting lefty singled in the first, doubled in a pair of runs in the second, hit a sacrifice fly in the third, blasted a three-run homer in the fifth, and drove in two more on a base hit in the seventh.

Nacho’s led from the outset building an insurmountable 16-2 lead in the fifth inning and coasted from there. RBI base hits by Eric Phillips (three hits), Dave O’Brien (three hits, two RBIs), and Chuck Stathopoulos (four hits, two RBIs) got things going for Nacho’s in the first inning. After that it was the Evangelista show as he knocked in eight of the next fifteen runs for Nacho’s. Other key contributors for the winners included Ed Adrian with four hits and Wayne Bombaci with three.

Dave Mayo led Tiki with three RBIs, and Sal Tidona and manager Ricky Cuevas had two apiece.

DaVinci’s 19                                                                         Speakeasy 13

On the strength of a pair of home runs and seven RBIs by Bill Novakovich, DaVinci’s rebounded from an early deficit to claim the victory over Speakeasy.

Trailing 5-4 in the fourth inning, Novakovich put DaVinci’s in the lead for good when he blasted a two-run home run to center field. A Dick Nemmers (three RBIs) two-run single and an RBI single by Ed Seery (three RBIs) concluded the fourth inning uprising. DaVinci’s scored five more times in the fifth, on an RBI single by Chris Flynn (two RBIs), a sacrifice fly by Novakovich, a two-run single by Bruce Denlinger (two RBIs), and another RBI single by Nemmers that upped the lead to 14-5. Novakovich added an RBI single in the seventh and capped his big day with a three-run round-tripper in the ninth.

Dave St. Angelo and Rick Benedetti led DaVinci’s 29-hit attack with four hits each, and Mike Gerace, Carl Parker, and Paul Kramer added three. Joe Lazzarotti laced a triple for the winners.

Speakeasy hitters were led by Mike Reale (four hits, three RBIs), Mark Whealy (four hits), Mike Galloway and Scott Golan (each with three hits and four RBIs), Terry Downs (three hits), and Vito Iacovazzi (triple).

MARCO DIVISION

Stonewalls 10                                                                               Sami’s 5

Playing complementary softball with its offense and defense working in unison, Stonewalls rallied from an early deficit to win its third game in a row and 11th overall.

Trailing 5-0 after an inning and a half, Stonewalls scored eight runs in its next three at-bats to take control of the game, thanks in large part to the swings of rookie Will Smith (three hits, two RBIs). In the bottom of the second, the lanky outfielder drilled a double to center with a run scoring on the play thanks to a Sami’s fielding error. A sacrifice fly by Tom Gazzillo (three RBIs, two of which came later in the game on a sixth-inning double when Stonewalls added some late insurance runs) pulled Stonewalls within 5-2. But Smith was at it again in the Men in Black’s next at bat in the third inning.

With bases loaded and the game now tied at 5-5, Smith boomed a two-run double to deep left centerfield, capping a five-run uprising for Stonewalls, giving it a 7-5 lead it did not yield. Preceding Smith’s blast, Dan Dumbauld ripped a solo home run down the left field line for the inning’s first run which was followed by run scoring single and a ground out tying the game and setting up Smith for his third double of the season. While its offense did enough to outscore Sami’s, Stonewalls defense was a significant element in the win. Frequently, Stonewalls defenders thwarted possible scoring chances by Sami’s with an array of running catches in the outfield, nifty grabs on the infield as well as force outs, including one from the outfield.

For Sami’s, Murph Knapke was the lone spotlight hitter with two RBIs.

Snook Inn 21                                                                             Brewery 7

Pounding out 30 hits as a team and scoring in every inning but one, Snook Inn thumped Brewery with the football-like final score.

The omen that it was going to be Snook’s day hitting started with the game’s first batter. Steve Hemmerlein (two RBIs) bashed a solo home run to deep left field for a quick 1-0 lead that eventually became 3-0 by the time Snook finished its first at-bat. And Hemmerlein would have plenty of company in the RBI/hit club as Snook scored 11 runs in the next four innings to turn the game into a rout. Key moments and hitters included:

  • Gary Menzies, three RBI’s, two of which he earned with a two-run home run in the third inning giving Snook a 6-1 lead.
  • Jim Willert (two RBIs), one of them on an RBI single, also in the third inning.
  • Pitcher Neal Newhouse (four hits and four RBIs) dropping a single to left field, giving Snook an 8-1 lead in the fourth inning.
  • Gary Pringle (four hits and two RBIs) looping an outside pitch to short right field for a run scoring single and 14-1 Snook lead in the fifth inning.
  • Karl Kann, Dan Grace, and John Cavanagh peppering the ball with three hits each.

The blowout win enabled Snook to keep its grip on first place, tied with Joey’s Pizza with identical 13-4 records. For Brewery, Bob Armstrong led their hit parade with three hits while Glenn Ahlquist and Mitch Eil had two RBIs each. Pitcher Jack O’ Brien smacked a triple for the Brew Crew.

Joey’s Pizza 16                                                                         Sand Bar 5

Batting three, four, and five in Joey’s Pizza’s lineup, Glenn Davis, George Giacobbi, and Todd Stigall combined for 10 hits and eight RBIs as the Pizza Men overpowered Sand Bar.

The Joey’s version of the Bash Brothers ignited the Pizza Men’s first-inning rally with two outs. Davis and Giacobbi smacked singles, putting runners at the corners. That brought up Stigall, who ripped an RBI single for Joey’s first run of the day. Joey’s would add four more runs to cap the uprising good for an early 5-0 lead. In the third inning, with one run in, it was Davis who took the spotlight. He blasted a no doubt solo home run to center field, his fourth of the season, good for a 7-1 Joey’s cushion. In the fifth inning, Davis reached on an error and Giacobbi followed with a looping double into right center field. Stigall then rocked a single to center field, scoring both of his hitting brethren as Joey’s took a commanding 11-5 lead. Davis and Giacobbi rounded out their bashing in the sixth inning. Davis doubled in two runs while Giacobbi singled in two more as Joey’s concluded its scoring for the day. The Bash Brothers final stat lines were Giacobbi, four hits and two RBIs, while Davis and Stigall each had three hits and three RBIs. Other contributors to Joey’s 21 hit attack included manager Todd Whitney (solo home run), as well as Robert Stried and Dick Carson with two RBIs each.

In an otherwise quiet day at the plate for Sand Bar (11 hits as a team), Kevin Smith delivered some hope in the fifth inning. He drilled a two-run home run to left center field, his second of the season, that reduced the Sand Men’s deficit to 8-5 at the time.

Snook Inn 9                                                                              Sand Bar 2

Dan Grace and Rob York smacked timely hits for Snook Inn, and its defense thwarted the few scoring chances Sand Bar had in claiming its 14th win of the season.

Trailing 2-0 after Sand Bar’s first at bat, Grace (two RBIs) drilled a line drive double to left center, just out of reach of the Sand Bar defense, scoring one run and tying the game at 2-2. Snook added a run on a Sand Bar error to close out the inning with a 3-2 lead. In the fourth inning, it was York’s turn to deliver. He ripped a two-out single to leftfield just between the Sand Bar defense, scoring two runs and giving Snook a 6-2 lead. The fifth inning belonged to Grace in the field and at the plate. With Sand Bar threatening with two runners on and no outs, Grace chased down a single to short rightfield and fired a strike to the plate, cutting down the Sand Bar runner’s aggressive bid to score. He then watched as his teammate Steve Hemmerlein led a rare double play. He snared a fly ball on the run and then made a perfect three-hop throw to the plate to get the Sand Bar runner who had tagged up trying to score. Grace then added misery to Sand Bar’s fifth inning when he punched a single to rightfield with two outs, scoring one run, upping Snook’s lead to 7-2.

Bill Thompson was Sand Bar’s lone spotlight hitter with two RBIs.

Stonewalls 8                                                                        Joey’s Pizza 7

Stonewalls Bobby Williams sharp ground ball single to leftfield in the bottom of the seventh inning scored the winning run and capped a four-run rally as the Men in Black came from behind to stun Joey’s Pizza.

Trailing 7-4 as it came to the plate in the bottom of the seventh inning, Stonewalls offense awakened at the right time. A pair of singles put two runners on. A single by Paul Sullivan created a scoring opportunity; however, an excellent relay by Joey’s cut down the runner at the plate, for the first out of the inning. Undeterred, Stonewalls kept swinging. Randy Morrison plated a run with a single to right field, cutting Joey’s lead to 7-5. Geoff Bentley then found a hole with an infield single, scoring another run and pulling Stonewalls within one at 7-6. That brought up pitcher Steve Chasin, who plopped a double down the rightfield line, tying the game at 7. An intentional walk loaded the bases followed by a pop out for the second out of the inning, setting up the drama for Williams’ (three hits and two RBIs on the day) game winning knock. Stonewalls stout defense also keyed the win. The Men in Black turned three double plays (including one on a relay from the outfield) to stay within striking distance of Joey’s. And they perfectly executed a rundown, catching a Joey’s hitter’s aggressive turn around first base on a single, tagging him out for the final out of the fifth inning.

Glenn Davis (three hits and two RBIs) had a big day batting for Joey’s. He boomed a two-run home run in the first inning (number five on the season), giving Joey’s an early lead. He also had a triple and a single. Hal Jurgensen had two RBIs, courtesy of a single in the fourth inning, which gave Joey’s a 4-1 lead at the time.

Sami’s 9                                                                                     Brewery 6

Sami’s snapped its three-game losing streak, thanks to a fast start in earning its eighth win of the season.

Jim Fairbanks (three hits) was the spotlight hitter for Sami’s that had eight of its hitters end the day with one RBI each. A Fairbanks double in the third inning kick-started a four-run uprising for Sami’s as it took a commanding 7-1 lead by the time the inning ended. Sami’s also had a steady day defensively, as it committed only one error as a team. Going into the final week of the season, Sami’s will have a shot at finishing .500 if they can win their final two games.

Trailing 9-3 as it batted in the bottom of the seventh, the Brew Crew plated three runs to make it interesting. Brewery’s offense was led by Bob Traver (a perfect three-hit day) and Mitch Eil with two RBIs.

GULF COAST DIVISION

Crazy Flamingo 7                                                                      Doreen’s 2

Crazy Flamingo scored five times in the first inning and made it hold up as the defense took over from there and they took down Doreen’s.

Rich Klein and Nick Lordi got things rolling for the Crazy Birds in the first with a pair of singles. Up stepped Jim Cuevas who proceeded to hammer a triple to right field, scoring both runners. Brian Bergman singled home Cuevas, and after an RBI fielder’s choice, Joe Barry completed the big inning with an RBI base hit, giving Crazy’s a 5-1 advantage. RBI singles by Gary Badger in the fourth and Cuevas again in the fifth extended the lead for Crazy’s to 7-2.

Cuevas, who pitched the whole game for Crazy’s, did it all with three hits while holding Doreen’s to nine hits, one of which was a triple by John Robichaud.

Oyster Society 14                                                      American Legion 13

Oyster Society and the American Legion battled toe-to-toe for the entire game before the Oyster Men pulled it out on a walk-off, run-scoring single by Ed Kopecky in the eighth inning.

Trailing 9-8 entering the bottom of the sixth, the Oyster Men pushed across five runs all with two outs. After a misplayed fly ball scored a pair of runs, Barry Neale pounded a triple to center field scoring two more. Fred Kramer capped the rally with an RBI single. American Legion fought back in the top of the seventh to tie the game at 13-all on RBI singles by John Barrett, Nick Brooks, and Tom Obermeier along with a fielder’s choice RBI by Jim Lencioni. It stayed that way until Kopecky knocked in the game winner in the bottom of the eighth.

Mike Roman blasted a three-run round-tripper and added a triple for the Oyster Society. Ray Niemeyer contributed three hits, Kopecky also tripled, and Neale drove in three runs for the winners.

Lencioni also hit a three-run bomb for the Legion and finished with four RBIs. He got help from Barrett (four hits, two RBIs), Brooks (three hits, two RBIs), and Obermeier (three RBIs) in the heartbreaking loss.

Friday March 6, 2026

Oyster Society 11                                                                     Doreen’s 7

Mike Roman had a big day leading the first-place Oyster Society to the comeback victory over Doreen’s.

The slugging shortstop had three hits and three RBIs including a clutch double in the sixth that tied the game at 7-all. Oyster Society trailed Doreen’s by a run coming into that inning, but a pair of walks set the table for Roman. After his double scored one run, Steve Risch drove in a run with a single, Barry Neale followed with a two-run single, and Alan Schneider completed the big inning with another RBI base hit that made it an 11-7 game.

Risch, Neale, and Schneider all finished the game with two RBIs for the Oyster Men. Warren Uhl led Doreen’s hitters with three hits and two RBIs, Jan Grossman also chipped in with three hits, and Paul Glynn knocked in a pair of runs in the loss.

American Legion 10                                                       Crazy Flamingo 9

Jim Lencioni capped a huge performance with a two-run walk-off home run, enabling American Legion to win the game in dramatic fashion over a stunned Crazy Flamingo club.

Lencioni, who finished the game with a pair of triples in addition to his game winner, came up with one on and the Legion trailing by a run in the seventh. The slugger blasted a long fly to center field and he was able to circle the bases just ahead of the relay throw to home as his teammates celebrated.

Three innings earlier, the Legion came back from a 4-2 deficit, scoring five times on an RBI single by Jeff Taylor, an RBI double by Tom Obermeier, an RBI triple by Lencioni, and an RBI base hit by Andy Pressler (two RBIs). Crazy Flamingo fought back, eventually taking a 9-7 lead, with the big blows being a two-run triple by manager Mick Keller and a two-run single by Brian Bergman (four RBIs). A Taylor RBI single cut Crazy’s lead to 9-8, setting up Lencioni’s heroics.

Taylor, who also hammered a solo homer in the second inning, finished with three hits and three RBIs for the winners.
