United Church Welcomes Kathleen Osborn Gerdes

United Church of Marco Island is pleased to announce the appointment of Kathleen Osborn Gerdes as the new full-time Director of Music, beginning this fall. Kathleen will be formally introduced to the congregation during worship on Sunday, October 12, followed by a welcome reception in her honor.  

Kathleen brings with her a remarkable career in professional music ministry, having served in leadership roles across Marco Island, Naples, Bonita Springs, and beyond. Her ministry has included directing choirs, praise teams, and bell choirs; planning and leading worship; accompanying on organ and piano; preparing and conducting sacred cantatas with orchestra; and nurturing the musical gifts of children, youth, and adults alike.  

Her extensive experience includes positions at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Naples, San Marco Catholic Church, Wesley United Methodist Church, and the Marco Island Community Chorus, where she has directed large ensembles and produced sacred choral works. In addition, Kathleen has served as a music instructor at the First Presbyterian Church Academy of Music in Bonita Springs and has held teaching and conducting appointments at The Pennsylvania State University, Susquehanna University, Wartburg College, the University of Iowa, and Northwestern University.  

Kathleen holds degrees in music education, voice, and organ performance from the University of Northern Iowa, the University of Iowa, and The Pennsylvania State University, where she completed all but her dissertation for the Doctor of Musical Arts in Choral Music Education.
