Stepping Up to the Plate

Stepping Up to The Plate - On Saturday, March 8, 2025, two teams of women-only senior softball players gathered at the Winterberry Athletic field for a “friendly” game, representing the first-ever Marco Island Senior Softball Women’s Powder Puff Game!

Powder Puff often refers to sports played by women or girls only!

Kim Coyle (spouse of Marco Senior Softball player Bill Coyle) said the game has been a year in the making. Kim and Michele Evangelista (spouse of Senior Softball player Matt Evangelista) have been planning since February 2024. Their spouses, Matt and Bill, were rookies last year playing for the Salty Dog Team (2024 Tournament Champs). “Naturally, we took our rightful places on the bleachers, cheering our spouses, slightly bored,” Kim added. “Then came the moment that changed everything. After watching one game, we decided to take matters into our hands – literally.”

Many members of the community came together to make the Powder Puff game happen.

* Singing the National Anthem was Carolyn Davis, wife of softball player Glenn Davis (player on Sand Bar).

* Karen Caster (wife of Ed Caster) had the honor of throwing the first pitch.

* Publix generously donated a cake for the post-game party/awards ceremony.

* Ice cream from Beebe’s.

* Texas Roadhouse gave out snack-packs.

Coach Courtney Jordak-Fields and some players from CJ Fastpitch, Marco Island’s newest addition to fastpitch softball with two teams of girls 8u and 10u levels, were special guests at the event. The teams took to the field with the Powder Puff players for the singing of The National Anthem.

Powder Puff Team Rosters:

White Lightning (Todd Rogers, Manager)

Chris Mitchell, Julie Rogers, Kim Parker, Michele Bartholomaus, Suzy Masulis, Coni VanderAarde, Michele Klebauskas, Teresa Krebs, and Karen Ramdeen.

Pink Flamingos (Susan Revall, Manager)

Jeannie Vitas, Carree St Angelo, Michele Evangelista, Linda Friend, Nancy Flynn, Kim Coyle, Jodi Price, Barbara Johnson, and Cherise Loy.

The final score was a tie – 22 each – so both teams were winners! “We had a great group of ladies out on the field for the Power Puff game, and I’m so proud of my Pink Flamingos,” said manager Sue Revall. “They showed grit, stamina, and determination each inning. We all had a day of fun, friendship, and sisterhood on the ‘field of dreams.’”

Marco is Women’s History Month and a great way to celebrate. Congratulations to the Powder Puff Teams making history at the Winterberry Athletic Field. They looked great and downright inspiring, swinging to connect with Ed Caster’s “fast pitches” and trying to beat the ball to first base!
