Normally, on a bright sunny day, you’d find many of these same faces at the Winterberry Baseball Field. There they would be competing against each other as part of the popular Marco Island Senior Softball League that’s been around since the late 1990s.
But on Wednesday, April 1, instead of hitting a softball, approximately 120 players gathered at the East Lakes Golf Club for their annual close-of-season golf scramble at the semi-private, par 72 course. The tradition was created by league member Tom Pugh and is now in its seventh year.
“This gives many of the league members a wonderful opportunity to gather together and have a little bit of fun before many of them leave for the summer months and enjoy a great time together,” said Pugh.
The players teed off promptly at 8:00 AM after receiving their instructions from Pugh and course officials. Upon completing their golf rounds, they gathered at the East Lakes Clubhouse for a delicious prime rib and chicken buffet lunch, refreshments, and the presentation of awards from the tournament play.
Tom Polston, who serves as the Commissioner of the senior softball league, encourages those seeking more information on how to support, register, or play in the league to visit their website at www.marcoseniorsoftballleague.com or visit their Facebook page for more information.
