Verdi’s 15                                                                               Speakeasy 0

A combination of clutch hitting and shutdown defense enabled Verdi’s to pitch a rare shutout as they completely dominated Speakeasy to remain atop the Island Division.

Verdi’s wasted no time getting on the board with a five-run first inning, thanks to RBI hits by Mike Faria and Bob Greve along with some sloppy defense by Speakeasy. Verdi’s added three more runs in the third on a run-scoring base hit by Rob Barstow (three hits, three RBIs) and a two-run single by Faria, who totaled three hits and four RBIs in the contest. Jim O’Toole tripled in two more runs for Verdi’s in the fifth, and he came around to score on another RBI hit by Barstow, making it 11-0 and the rout was on.

Dan Harrar also contributed two RBIs for Verdi’s, who held Speakeasy to four hits and committed no errors in the game.

Salty Dog 13                                                                    Nacho Mama’s 8

Salty Dog jumped out to a 13-2 lead and withstood some late fireworks by Nacho Mama’s to cruise to the win.

Chip Mathers and Brian Alexander led a balanced offense with four hits each, and Ron Lukasevicz added three. A Mathers run-scoring triple in the second inning followed by an RBI hit by Tom Polston (two RBIs) opened a 6-0 lead for the Dog. They tacked on three more the following inning, featuring a run-scoring single by Dan Gulick and a Dave Johnson (two RBIs) sacrifice fly, giving them a 9-0 advantage. Dave Koch and Ron Goralski also drove in a pair of runs in the game for the winners.

Pitcher Dave O’Brien led Nacho’s with four hits and two RBIs, one of which closed the gap to 13-6 in the sixth inning. Chuck Stathopoulos and Matt Evangelista both had three hits, and Stathopoulos and Bill Coyle each knocked in two runs in the loss.

Salty Dog 16                                                                        Speakeasy 15

In one of the most exciting contests of the season, Salty Dog was able to outlast Speakeasy in a game that took ten innings to decide.

The Dog had to come back several times from deficits throughout the game. Trailing 10-6 after five innings, Salty outfielder Tom Polston (three hits, two RBIs) tripled to center to start the sixth. Dave Koch (two RBIs) singled home Polston, then two batters later Brian Ward drove in a pair of runs with another triple, and Ward eventually scored on a groundout to even the score at ten. Then in the ninth inning, the Dog erased a two-run deficit on a sacrifice fly by Brian Alexander and an RBI base hit by Polston, sending the game to extra innings.

In the tenth, Ron Goralski (three hits, three RBIs) doubled home a pair of runs capping a three-run inning for the Dog. Speakeasy didn’t go quietly as Tom Vander Aarde (three hits, three RBIs) singled home a run to reduce the deficit to 16-15. But Salty turned a clutch double-play to end the game stranding the tying run on third base.

Other hit leaders for the Dog included Jeff Robinson, Dan Gulick, and Rob Ferreira, all with three hits.

Terry Downs had a huge day for Speakeasy with five hits and two RBIs. Laz Ferro and Mike Galloway contributed three hits, and Ferro, Mike Reale, and Craig Cunningham drove home two runs apiece in a hard-fought loss.

Dolphin Tiki 12                                                                           Verdi’s 11

Dolphin Tiki, trailing by a run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, got clutch RBI hits by Eric Jeanotte and David Falls to claim the dramatic walk-off victory over shell-shocked Verdi’s.

Tiki, who trailed most of the way, pulled to within one run in the seventh when they pushed a pair of runs across on a two-run single by John Kelly. Then in the eighth, Verdi’s scored three times, on a Mike Compton (two RBIs) sacrifice fly, a Bob Greve single, and an error to stretch the lead to 11-7. But Tiki answered with three of their own on a booming three-run round-tripper by Brian Craig, closing the deficit to 11-10 and setting up the ninth inning heroics.

Lou Marinaccio peppered the ball for four hits and two RBIs, and Dave Shultz and Sal Tidona added three hits for the winners. Verdi’s was led by Rob Barstow with four hits, and Greve, Jon Thomas, Jim O’Toole, and Dan Harrar, who chipped in with three apiece. Mike Faria knocked in three runs in the tough-luck loss.

Brewery 10                                                                             Snook Inn 9

Brewery’s fast start paid dividends as it held on to beat Snook Inn.

Rod Lashley led Brew Crew’s attack with three hits and two RBIs which included a first-pitch, leadoff home run in the first inning, part of a four-run opening frame for the Brew Crew. Lashley was instrumental in Brewery’s five-run scoring blitz in the second inning. With one runner on, he yanked a run scoring double down the right field line, upping Brewery’s lead to 5-0. Glenn Ahlquist (two RBIs) then smashed a line drive two-run home run to center field as Brewery would score two more times, taking a seemingly comfortable 9-0 lead after two at bats. Rick DiStasio also chipped into Brewery’s 16-hit attack with two RBIs.

Despite the early deficit, Snook plucked away, breaking through with a four-run sixth inning. Karl Kann started the rally by booming an opposite field solo home run, halving Brewery’s lead to 10-5. Following a walk and a single, Bob Bejnerowicz (three RBIs) cleared the bases by smacking a triple down the right field line as Snook would add another run to pull within 10-8.

Trailing 10-9 in the seventh inning and with two runners on and one out, Snook appeared ready to further its comeback. However, DiStasio sealed the win for Brewery by turning a nifty 6-3 double play on a ground ball to end the threat.

Stonewalls 12                                                                               Sami’s 9

Tom Gazzillo had four RBIs, three of which came on a timely three-run home run, as resilient Stonewalls overcame an early deficit for its fifth win of the season while also snapping Sami’s four-game winning streak.

Clinging to a 7-6 lead in the fifth inning after trailing early in the game, Stonewalls went to work. Second baseman Geoff Bentley’s (two RBIs) looping single to right center field plated two runs, upping Stonewalls lead to 9-6. That brought up Gazzillo, whose arching opposite field drive to right field landed just inside the chalk and rolled for a three-run home run, capping Stonewalls second five-run uprising of the afternoon and upping its lead to 12-6. Other hitting stars for Stonewalls included rookie Brian Wegener, who had two RBIs, and resurgent Tom Breslin, who blasted a triple.

Sami’s was led by outfielder Tim Rose, who had three hits and two RBIs, one which came when he laced a run scoring double in the first inning, good for a 5-0 Sami’s lead. John Stuart added two RBIs to Sami’s attack. The White and Reds’ power swings belonged to Dave Schott and John Binns, who each belted solo home runs.

Joey’s Pizza 14                                                                       Sand Bar 12

Joey’s used two five-run innings to overcome an early deficit to claim its fourth win of 2026 while extending Sand Bar’s season-opening losing streak to seven games.

Trailing by seven runs as it batted in the bottom of the second inning, Tim McKenna (three hits) extended Joey’s rally with a run scoring double, cutting its deficit to 7-4. Dick Carson (two RBIs) then followed with a run scoring single, completing Joey’s five-run uprising. It was more of the same for Joey’s in their next at-bat in the third inning.

George Giacobbi (two RBIs) ignited the rally with run scoring single, pulling Joey’s within one at 7-6. After adding two more runs to take the lead, Joey’s capped the uprising when Robert Stried, the Pizza Men’s season RBI leader, ripped a two-run single to left, good for a 10-7 Joey’s advantage. Two of Joey’s add on runs came courtesy of manager Todd Whitney. The skipper lined a two-run home run to centerfield in the fifth inning, part of a three-run rally as Joey’s took a football like score lead of 14-7.

The good news for Sand Bar was its largely dormant offense awakened for several run scoring extra base hits. Dean Leffelman had one of the big swings, rocketing an opposite field solo home run. Joe Logisz made his first hit of the season count when smacked an RBI triple to center field. Kevin Smith (three hits) and Jack Martin (two RBIs) added to the Sand Men’s offense.

Snook Inn 14                                                                            Sand Bar 8

John Cavanagh’s three hit and three RBI day was the offensive spark Snook Inn needed to get back in the win column on a cold and windy day for senior softball.

With the game tied at 6-6 in the bottom of the third inning, Cavanagh strode to the plate with the bases full of his teammates. After taking a strike, his wind-aided drive to left center field resulted in a two-run double, giving Snook an 8-6 lead. The Snook added two more runs, courtesy of a Sand Bar error and run scoring single to complete its second five-run uprising of the game and take a comfortable 10-6 lead it did not yield. Other hitting stars in Snook’s 22 hit attack included Karl Kann, Gary Pringle, and sub–Larry Locks with three hits each, while Rob York and Neal Newhouse had two RBIs apiece.

Joe Logisz (three RBIs) had the signature swing of the day for Sand Bar in the second inning. With bases loaded and two runs already in for Sand Bar, Logisz smacked a perfectly placed triple to rightfield that cleared the bases and gave Sand Bar a temporary 6-5 lead. Besides Logisz’s three-bagger, it was another rough day for Sand Bar hitting wise, as it generated only eight hits as a team.

Brewery 9                                                                                     Sami’s 7

Brewery made the most of its 13 hits as a team, stroking three home runs as it rallied to beat Sami’s, claiming its third win in its last four games.

After Brewery tied the game at 6-6 in the top of the sixth inning, Bob Traver’s (three RBIs) sharp ground ball rolled through Sami’s right-side infield and outfield defense, resulting in a three-run home run, giving Brewery a 9-6 lead it did not relinquish. Brewery’s other four baggers came on consecutive at-bats in the fourth inning. Right-handed batter Glenn Ahlquist legged out a high drive to rightfield for a solo shot. Then the next batter, lefty Rod Lashley, smoked a line drive to right field for a no-doubter solo home run. Brewery also had an exceptional day fielding. It did not commit an error and turned three double plays, several of which snuffed out Sami’s scoring chances.

John Binns paced Sami’s offense with three hits. His RBI single in the fourth inning kick-started a five-run uprising for Sami’s that saw it take a 6-3 lead. Ed Kingsbury and Tim Rose chipped in with two RBIs each.

Doreen’s 17                                                                American Legion 15

Powered by a three-run home run by John Robichaud, Doreen’s fought off a late rally by the American Legion to claim the victory.

Engaged in a nip-and-tuck battle in the first three innings, Doreen’s erupted for five runs in the fourth, highlighted by a run scoring double by Larry Anspach (three hits, three RBIs) and a run scoring single by Dick Folsom (two RBIs) to take a 12-5 lead. After the Legion narrowed the gap to 12-10 with a five-run inning of their own, capped by a three-run triple by Jim Lencioni, Doreen’s quickly responded with another five-run inning, with Anspach again delivering the big blow with a two-run single. That gave Doreen’s a 17-10 advantage that proved to be enough to secure the win.

Other contributors for Doreen’s included Warren Uhl, who blasted a triple, and Rich Larkin, who drove home a pair of runs.

The Legion wasted a big game from Tom Obermeier who finished with three hits and five RBIs. Big production for the Legion also came from Nick Brooks with four hits, Jeff Taylor and Mike Arnold with three apiece, Rick Condle with two RBIs, and Don Mandetta, who slashed a triple in the contest.

Crazy Flamingo 19                                                                    Doreen’s 3

Crazy Flamingo bounced back in a big way from a tough loss on Wednesday to soundly defeat Doreen’s in a game ended after six innings due to the mercy rule.

Crazy’s outfielder Brian Bergman was unstoppable, going a perfect 4-for-4, including a three-run bomb and knocked in seven runs in the game. Crazy’s opened the scoring with four first inning runs, featuring a run-scoring single by Jim Cuevas (three hits) and an RBI double by Bergman. Bergman struck again in the third with another double, this one driving in a pair of runs. Later in the inning, Mick Keller (two RBIs) and Huck McPhee (three RBIs) added RBI singles and by the time the dust settled, Crazy’s led 9-0 and were never threatened after that.

Nick Lordi and Rich Klein also pitched in with three hits for the Crazy Birds, one of Klein’s being a triple. Warren Uhl hammered a run-scoring triple for the lone highlight for Doreen’s.

Oyster Society 15                                                      American Legion 12

Oyster Society did most of their damage in the final two innings as they had to come back to defeat American Legion to increase their winning streak to six.

Trailing 8-7 after five innings, the Oyster Men crossed the plate five times in the sixth. After a leadoff single and an intentional walk, Steve Risch launched a missile into deep left field, good for a three-run homer. Barry Neale (two RBIs) drove home another run, and an error scored the fifth run. After the Legion got one run back in the bottom half on a sacrifice fly by Tom Obermeier, the Oyster Men scored three more times in the seventh, two on bases loaded walks and one on an RBI single by Mike Corless (three hits, two RBIs) that gave them a 15-9 advantage.

Mike Roman slammed a two-run home run, giving the Oyster Society an early 2-0 lead as part of his three RBI game. Dave Chroust and Al Cenicola contributed three hits, and Fred Kramer knocked in three runs for the winners.

John Barrett had three hits, including a third-inning grand slam that gave the Legion a brief 6-5 lead, and Jerry Lenhoff added a two-run double in the seventh that narrowed the gap to 15-11 at the time.
