For more than fifty years, the Rotary Club of Marco Island (Noontime) has invested in the future of our community’s youth through college scholarships, grants, and leadership programs—providing more than $1 million in support since the program’s inception.
Shortly after the Club was established in 1966, several members formed a scholarship committee to assist graduating high school seniors in the region. The program began modestly, awarding two scholarships of $500 per semester to graduates of Lely High School.
Over the next two decades, the program steadily gained momentum. Through generous personal contributions from dedicated members, additional support from fellow Rotarians, and community fundraising efforts, the Club established the Marco Island Rotary Club Foundation in January 1994. At that time, approximately $300,000 was placed into an endowment fund, with only the investment earnings used to fund scholarships—ensuring long-term sustainability.
In 1995, scholarships increased to $750 per student and continued to grow, reaching $1,500 in 2007. The number of recipients also expanded from two to three students. For the next 15 years, the Foundation consistently funded approximately $36,000 annually in scholarships. During periods of market decline, Club members stepped forward with personal contributions to maintain support levels and, at times, increase the number of students served.
Expanding Opportunities
In the early 2020s, the Trustees introduced a new initiative: the Freshman Grant. This one-time scholarship is designed to help students launch their college journey, with the expectation that once established, they will secure additional funding from other sources to continue their education.
In 2025 alone, the Club awarded: six freshman grants of $5,000 each and two four-year grants of $2,000 per semester. This represents a total annual commitment of $62,000!
Recognizing the importance of career and technical education, the Club also initiated vocational school scholarships three years ago. Since then, three $2,000 vocational scholarships have been awarded.
The Club currently supports students from Marco Island Academy, Lely High School, St. John Neumann High School, and Everglades City School.
Financial need is the primary criterion in awarding scholarships, with academic achievement and community service serving as strong secondary considerations. Recipients of the four-year grants must maintain required credit hours and meet minimum GPA standards to continue receiving funding.
Today, the Club’s scholarship endowment is managed by the Collier Community Foundation. Strong investment performance—combined with a generous legacy bequest from a former member—has grown the endowment to more than $800,000. Structured for perpetual sustainability, the endowment ensures that future generations of students will continue to benefit.
While the Club celebrates the growth of its endowment, this year marks an especially meaningful milestone: the Rotary Club of Marco Island (Noontime) has now provided well over $1,000,000 in scholarships since the program began.
Leadership Development and Youth Recognition
Beyond scholarships, the Club is deeply committed to youth leadership development.
Each year, the local Rotary District offers leadership programs and seminars. The Club sponsors two high school juniors to attend the six-day Seminar for Tomorrow’s Leaders in Lakeland, Florida—a transformative experience featuring leadership training, motivational speakers, and team-building activities.
Additionally, Rotary’s four-day Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) program provides freshmen and sophomores with hands-on leadership training and personal development opportunities.
During the school year, the Club also hosts a monthly Student of the Month Luncheon, honoring students from Tommie Barfield Elementary School, Marco Island Charter Middle School, Manatee Middle School, Marco Island Academy, and Lely High School
Students are nominated by their teachers and recognized for their leadership, character, and academic achievement.
Through its commitment to Vocational Service, the Rotary Club of Marco Island (Noontime) remains proud and honored to invest in the next generation of leaders—strengthening our community today and for decades to come.
60th Anniversary Celebration
On Saturday, April 11, 2026, the Club will celebrate 60 years of community and international service at its 16th Annual Spirit Awards and Diamond Anniversary Gala, held at the Island Country Club.
The evening will honor three distinguished community members: Linda Cassens, Dave Rice, and Val Simon.
