Rookery Bay Science Nite Series

Posted

Conversation and connection take center stage this fall at Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve with the Science Nite Series - “Oceans, Plastics and Peace of Mind” on October 22, November 25, and December 17 from 5:30-7:30 PM. This three-part after-hours program held at the Rookery Bay Environmental Learning Center offers engaging talks on a variety of environmental topics in science and nature. Each evening stands on its own, so participants may attend one, two, or all three sessions depending on their interests.

Science Nites also includes food and drink, a scavenger hunt to win prizes, the chance to mingle with fellow nature lovers, as well as extra time to enjoy the Rookery Bay Environmental Learning Center’s touch tank, aquariums, exhibits, and art gallery.

Science Nite Topics:
October 22 - Plastics in the Environment
Jean Waller from the League of Women Voters Plastics Task Force tackles the growing issue of single-use plastics in the environment, food chain, and even in human bodies. Learn what this means for Florida’s wildlife, coastlines, and personal health and discover simple, practical steps anyone can take to make a difference.

November 25 - Megalodons, Mermaids, and Climate: Answers to Your Ocean and Atmosphere Questions

Marine Scientist Ellen Prager and Meteorologist Dave Jones bring humor, illustrations, and storytelling to answer wild and wonderful questions about the ocean, atmosphere, and weather. Their unique blend of science and fun has captivated audiences on stage, in the media, and even on podcasts with comedian Paula Poundstone.

December 17 - Enhancing Well-being and Personal Resilience Through Connection to Nature

Dr. Brent Jackson of Florida Gulf Coast University’s Water School explores the powerful link between time in nature and people’s well-being. Drawing from both research and real-world experience, he shares how reconnecting with the natural world can reduce stress, boost resilience, and enhance overall health.
