Día de los Muertos Grass Wall and Masks Display

A big thanks to the art students from the Marco Island Charter Middle School (MICMS) under the guidance of art teacher Georgann (Gigi) Garraty. This annual Día de los Muertos exhibit is ready for viewing and became a tradition at the Marco Island Center for the Arts in 2019.

The calaveras, or skull paintings, are unique to each student, according to Hyla Crane, Executive Director for the Marco Island Center for the Arts and are not meant to be scary. The calaveras are more symbolic and serve as a joyful reminder of departed loved ones celebrating their lives in festive ways.

This exhibit is part of the ¡ARTE VIVA! celebration of Hispanic culture and Art. Our Hispanic community makes up 30% of the region’s population, sharing their heritage with all of us.
