Rain Gutter Regatta

Posted

On a bright sunny day, the seven members of Pack 234’s Wolf Den held a Rain Gutter Regatta at Mackle Park. The Den members built their catamarans several weeks before the race from balsa wood, dowel rods, and a sail. Each Cub Scout fashioned their cat by designing and sanding their boats' pontoons, adding a frame, mast, and sail. After assembling their boat, each Cub decorated their sailboat with colors and designs of their choice, including the sail.

Eagle Scout Matthew Rabii and Barry Fisher built frames for the 10-foot sealed gutters.

After testing their sailboats at home, the race day came for the designers/racers.

The rain gutters were filled with water, and the Cub Scouts were ready to go!

Each Cub blew through a straw to propel their sailboat for 10 feet. The race had a double elimination giving everyone two chances.

Upon the starter’s word, the sailboats took off, propelled by the Cub’s mighty gusts of wind.

After many contests, the two finalists raced for an ultimate winner. Den Leader Amanda Fisher announced the Grand Champion, Track finalist, and Bronze racer. Cubs earned awards for their designs and sportsmanship:

  • Comeback Charger
  • Top Sportsmanship
  • Best in Show
  • Creative Captain

After the official race ended Cub Scouts raced friends until exhausted.

Thank you to Den Leader Amanda Fisher, Den parents, and starters. Congratulations to Pack 234’s Wolf Den.
