Pirates Take Over Marco’s Historical Museum

Posted

Blimey! It was Friday, June 27, and fortunately, the rain stayed away as Marco’s tough and rugged buccaneers celebrated a faux pirate holiday at the Marco Island Historical Museum (MIHM). Ahoy, me hearties - it was fun to observe the young attendees embarking on an imaginary pirate adventure pretending to be Jack Sparrow, wearing eye patches and shoulder-perched parrots in a pirate-themed set on the grounds of the MIHM.

According to Pat Rutledge, CEO for the Marco Island Historical Society, this fun tradition has been celebrated at the Museum for the last six years, and planners always make sure Pirate Day is held on a Friday so all the young swashbucklers from the local day camps get to attend and yell “Arrrgh!”

Whether you were influenced by the pirates from the era of Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson, or by Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean series, some things don’t change – X still marks the spot, and you will still be searching for that buried treasure.

Rebecca Mazeroski, the Manager of the Marco Island Historical Museum, confirmed that the three-hour event hosted over 300 pirate guests! Popular activities included Pin Ye Eyepatch Matey, Create your own Treasure Map, Dead Man’s Drop, and the Toss Ye Ring on the Hook, which was not as easy as it looked.
