Heart Reflections: New Beginnings at La Petite Galerie

A new exhibit is currently on display at the Marco Island Center for the Arts La Petite Galerie, and just in time for Valentine’s Day! Joyce Flynn Hirsch is a self-taught artist from Indianapolis, Indiana, and as a teenager, she watched her friend’s father make life-sized hand-painted movie posters for the local theater. This ignited her passion for exploring a variety of artistic pursuits. At the age of 40, her love for painting emerged. One of her earliest works, the Shroud of Turin, touched her deeply, leading her to paint with growing devotion. Her desire to learn new art forms expanded to woodworking and dressmaking. Being attracted to design and fabric, she embarked on a career in three-dimensional art. Flynn Hirsch spent several years designing and constructing window fashions and home décor for clients’ homes. After retiring and relocating to Naples, Florida she is painting with renewed enthusiasm.

Working primarily in acrylics, her paintings capture the quiet evolving beauty of nature, interpreting its concrete or abstract concepts using color, contrast, and form. Joyce’s artworks are inspired by nature, with its own pulsating heartbeat, patterns, reflections, and colors. “Divine creation is a masterpiece within itself,” said Flynn Hirsch. “It presents a new vision daily from sunrise to sunset, stirring my senses, awakening my spiritual side, and reminding me that each day is a new beginning.”

Flynn Hirsch’s exhibit at the La Petite Galerie consists of paintings she has created over the years after a hiatus from making artwork. Each painting is a personal reflection of her heart; an emotion, a memory or a tranquil moment in time. “Hopefully these paintings communicate the beauty and wonder that surround us and provide each viewer a moment of peace, delight, and reflection,” said Flynn Hirsch.

Joyce was asked to do this exhibit for La Petite Galerie and for the last year, she painted her heart out. “The Art Center took a chance on me and I wanted to make sure I give it my best,” said Flynn Hirsch. “It was very scary as I am getting older and I found that even when I came to a roadblock, I worked my way through it and I found a renewed love for painting. I cannot stop painting now. I painted animals and I did not think I could do animals and I love their eyes and expressions. I love nature - it centers us - and if you look at sunrises and sunsets it calms us.”

Flynn Hirsch painted Nature’s Valentines and as a young girl, she lived in a very small town and had neighbors who had gardens with bleeding hearts, and that was a new thing for her. She was also born on Valentine’s Day, sharing that we need more love in the world.

Heart Reflections: New Beginnings Exhibit at the Art Center La Petite Galerie is available for viewing through February 24, 2026, and is free to the public.

You are also invited to a Second Tuesday reception on February 10 from 5:30-7:00 PM. This is a great chance to meet the artists and enjoy the exhibitions.
