MIA Falls to High Flying Village School

For years, the Paradise Coast Athletic Conference (PCAC) was strictly a non-dunking league. Not because dunking the basketball was against the rules, but because there were no players in the league that could dunk during game conditions. How things have changed. On Thursday, November 21, Village School scored a number of dunks in a 71-48 home win over Marco Island Academy. But MIA coach Jim Watt was undaunted following the game.

“They're a tough school,” Watt said, “they have two kids that can dunk the ball. So, it was a tough outing for us. But we are playing some tough away games to start the season. Our kids played really well. I’m very proud of them. We're developing, we're coming along. I think we're getting ready.”

The Rays (0-2) also dropped a road game to Seacrest (3-0), 77-50, on Tuesday, November 19.

"We haven't been in our home gym yet,” Watt said, "so we're getting ready for that. That's coming up in December.”

Village School (1-1) jumped out to a 23-6 lead in the first quarter and never looked back, taking a 35-23 lead into halftime.

The young Rays, with only one senior starter, coach’s son Jacob Watt, have a solid roster, the elder Watt believes.

“Jordan Rodden is a big part of our offense,” Watt said. “The Nazarko brothers, Mekyle and Veleon, and Jake is our point guard. He's doing a good job bringing the ball up the floor. And Cade Martin a sophomore, was our surprise this year. He came out from Kansas City, Kansas. He was our surprise this year at the school.”

Watt and Rodden were MIA’s scoring leaders against Village School, with 17 and 16 points respectively. Veleon Nazarko had 10 and Martin four to lead the Rays.

“We’re young, we’re still finding ourselves,” Watt said. "We're still figuring out how to play with bigger teams and faster teams. But we're getting there. I'm excited.”

The Rays faced Everglades City (1-2) on Wednesday, November 27 in a tournament game. They open their home schedule on Monday, December 2, when they host Southwest Florida Christian (2-1).
