Lely High School had their share of success in 2025, led by the boys soccer team, who finished 16-6-4 and advanced to the Sweet 16 before losing to eventual state champions Barron Collier. The football team, who advanced to the regional semifinals before falling to state and national power Miami Central, once again put up gaudy offensive numbers. The basketball team is off to a hot start in 2025, racing to an 11-0 start with a lineup that features 12 seniors. The feeder team for Lely football, the South Naples Trojans, advanced to the Pop Warner National Championships in North Carolina in 2025. The junior Trojans won their first round game before bowing out in the semifinals to the eventual national champions, Oceanside, California.
It was the football team that drew the most attention with an offense that produced 540 points in 12 games. Junior running back Nino Joseph set the school's all-time rushing mark with 4,402 yards. Sophomore quarterback Brady Quinn passed for 2,960 yards and 37 touchdowns while only throwing 10 interceptions. Unfortunately, the football program suffered the loss of its head coach, Ben Hammer, who was fired the day before winter break. Hammer had the program on an upward trajectory (see Three and Out? in this edition of the Coastal Breeze News). In other tough news for the football program, Quinn announced he is transferring to East Coach power Hollywood Chaminade Madonna, who won four straight state championships from 2021-2024.
Robbie Schank is in year 32 as head coach of the soccer team. We’ll never know how far his 2024-2025 soccer team may have advanced if not for the bad luck of having the state champion in his district. His loss to Barron Collier was a tough 4-1 affair.
In other off-field news, the school’s athletic director, Madison Squeglia, was also dismissed prior to winter break.
