It didn’t look like much went wrong for Lely in their 70-12 utter domination of South Plantation Friday night at Trojan Stadium. But Trojans head coach Ben Hammer wasn’t so sure.
"I think we'll be surprised,” Hammer said after the game. "We always tell the kids and show them that when you feel like it's bad, it's never as bad as it seems. And when you feel like it's good, it's never as good as it seems. We're still going to use that film to get better and continue to improve and work towards our goals.”
It will be hard for the Trojans to improve on Friday's performance. They literally scored every time they touched the ball. They led 64-6 at halftime, and it really wasn’t that close. The Trojans mixed in long runs, long pass plays, and long runs by their passer. Their defense basically gave up one score. The second score came near the end of the second half, which was played with a running clock.
Hammer was happy with his team’s effort.
“It seems like they competed hard,” he said. "They played really hard. We had a lot of people contribute. But until we get a chance to break down the film, it's kind of hard to tell. We're just going to keep continuing to improve and continuing to battle and get one percent better every day."
Hammer was able to get his back-ups a lot of action Friday night.
“A lot of those guys did a nice job,” he said. "We had some physical tackles. We got a couple more turnovers. We were able to gain some yards. Freshman Billy Bornelus on that last run was a pretty nice deal. We played the backups the second half of the second quarter and the whole second half."
Hammer won’t have any trouble getting his team ready for Friday’s season opener at crosstown rival Golden Gate.
‘We’re going to practice, making a game plan,” Hammer said, "getting ready to play a good ball club and hopefully bringing our A-game."
If Friday night was any indication, Golden Gate will likely see an A-game effort from the Trojans.
