In Loving Memory of Colonel Thomas J. Marshall

Posted

Colonel Thomas J. Marshall, age 90, passed away on Oct. 17, 2024. Tom was born in Brooklyn, New York. He was the youngest of six children to William Marshall and Margaret (Keating) Marshall. His father had emigrated from London, England and owned an oil heating business after serving in WWI. His mother was a practical nurse. After Tom finished high school he moved to Miami, Florida and pursued his interest in automobiles, having started a car sales business in 1957. Shortly thereafter he was drafted into the Army. Later that year he was selected for Officer Candidate School and was commissioned a Second Lt. of Infantry in April 1958. Tom remained in the Army for the next 26 years and retired as a full Colonel in 1983. Tom became a parachutist and aviator, served with the Seventh Infantry Division, completing two tours in Vietnam and serving in Korea. His Army training included the Infantry Officer Career Course, the Command and General Staff College and the Army War College. Tom earned a BS from Nebraska University and a Masters in International Relations from Oklahoma University. He completed a tour on the Army Staff before moving to the Joint Chiefs of Staff as a member of the US Nuclear Arms Control Delegation negotiating the INF Nuclear Treaty with the Soviet Union. Tom was privileged to be a member of the OCS Hall of Fame and the Ohio University ROTC Hall of Fame, saving that program from elimination. For his service, Tom was awarded The Defense Meritorious Medal, three Meritorious Service Medals, The Distinguished Flying Cross, Twenty Air Medals, three Bronze stars and the Purple Heart. He flight logged over one thousand combat hours. Retiring from the Army, Tom joined SAIC a defense contractor focusing on European Arms Control and NATO. Fifteen years later he again retired as a VP and with his wife Elysee moved to Naples, Florida. Tom and Elysee had a unique retirement plan. Instead of a second home or cruises they would spend three months in a different place often in another country. They began in Kinsale, Ireland. They joined the local golf club and toured Ireland and even found Tom's relatives. They were hooked, and for eighteen summers they left Naples and rented homes in Australia, New Zealand, Carmel, California, Slovenia, Estonia, Annapolis, Maine, Saratoga Springs, Rome, Paris, London, and Cambridge, England. Tom wrote and published eight photo travel books and one "How To" book on Making The World Your Second Home. Tom's first marriage ended in divorce. He leaves behind his wonderful, wanderlust companion and wife, Elysee (nee) Adkins, two sons, Thomas Marshall II, wife Yu, two grandsons, Aiden and Tommy. The second son, Bradley and wife, Robyn.

A celebration of Tom’s life will be held on January 11 at 11:00 AM at The United Congregational Church of Marco Island, 320 N Barfield Dr., Marco Island, FL 34145.
