On the second Saturday of each month, Empowerment Farm opens its gates to the public for a morning of discovery, connection, and hands-on learning. Last Saturday, visitors gathered between 9:00 AM and 1:00 PM for the July edition of Open Farm & Workshops, a recurring event designed to make sustainable agriculture approachable and fun.
For just $5, guests can explore the farm at their own pace, visiting animals and gardens on a self-guided tour. Those opting for the $10 workshop ticket gain access to both the tour and scheduled workshops, each led by passionate instructors eager to share practical knowledge.
The day’s first session, JusTeeny’s Greenies, introduced guests to the flavorful and nutrient-packed world of microgreens. Led by Justine and Matt, the Naples-based duo behind the local business JusTeeny’s Greenies, the workshop focused on how to grow microgreens using creative, accessible techniques. Attendees learned how to transform everyday materials into compact growing systems perfect for kitchen counters, sunny windowsills, or tiny backyards.
Microgreens aren’t just trendy - they’re tiny nutritional powerhouses. According to JusTeeny’s Greenies, these young vegetable greens can contain up to 40 times the nutrients of their fully grown counterparts. Rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, microgreens are known to support immune function, reduce inflammation, and promote overall well-being. They're also incredibly versatile, adding fresh flavor, vibrant color, and a nutritional boost to smoothies, sandwiches, salads, and more. Best of all, they’re easy to grow at home, making them an accessible first step into the world of homegrown health. To learn more about their mission and products, visit justeenygreenies.com.
At 11:00 AM, Rabbits on the Farm brought attendees face-to-face with the farm’s resident bunnies. This interactive session covered the benefits of raising rabbits - from natural fertilizer to low-cost sustainability—and sparked plenty of curiosity from wide-eyed kids and budding homesteaders alike.
Whether you're a backyard gardener, a curious parent, or someone seeking a breath of fresh air, Empowerment Farm’s monthly event is an opportunity to engage with local agriculture and reconnect with nature. The next Open Farm & Workshops day is scheduled for August 9th.
