Going Strong

An undefeated season was not necessarily the goal for the year’s high-flying Marco Island Academy volleyball team. But it was sure fun while it lasted.

The Rays had a busy week, playing four matches, including wins at Oasis (September 2), home against Canterbury (September 4), and at Aubrey Rogers (September 5). And while they didn’t knock off state power Calvary Christian (Clearwater) at home on Saturday, September 6, their poise under pressure bodes well for the future.

The Rays improved their record to 6-0 before bowing to Calvary Christian 25-21, 25-15, 25-17 Saturday. That followed three exceptional performances earlier in the week.

The Rays outlasted Oasis in a wild five-setter in the Sharks’ gym. It looked like it may be an easy one as the Rays prevailed 25-11 in the opening set. Then Oasis bounced back with a 26-24 win. The Rays rebounded with an easy 25-9 win in the third set, only to drop the fourth set, 25-23. In the 15-point finale, the Rays prevailed 15-8.

Canterbury gave the Rays a go on Thursday, taking the third set 25-22. But the Rays bounced back and blitzed the Cougars 25-11 in the fourth set to win the match. The Rays took an easy three-set win over Aubrey Rogers Friday night.

The Rays (6-1) travel to Everglades City (5-0) Thursday, September 11, before returning home for a Tuesday, September 16, contest with Donahue Catholic (0-6).
