Salty Dog 13 DaVinci’s 6
Brian Alexander’s three-run triple capped a five-run rally in the ninth as Salty Dog shook off a slow start to gradually pull away from and defeat DaVinci’s.
Earlier in the game, with Salty Dog clinging to a 4-3 lead in the sixth inning, the Dog scored three times, two of which were courtesy of run-scoring hits by Dave Koch and Bill Krausmann. Then, with the Dog ahead 8-5 going into the ninth, five more runs crossed the plate, three thanks to Alexander’s blast, extending the lead for the Dog to 13-5 and putting the game out of reach.
Alexander finished the game with three hits and four RBIs. Other Dogs making an impact included pitcher Bob Ferreira with four hits, and Koch and Tom Polston adding three apiece, with Polston plating a pair of runs in the contest.
For DaVinci’s, Mike Gerace, Dave St. Angelo, Carl Parker, and Chris Flynn all had three hits to lead the team.
Verdi’s 14 Nacho Mama’s 13
Mike Faria (who finished with three hits) lined a single to left field, scoring the winning run in the bottom of the ninth enabling Verdi’s to escape with the comeback, walk-off victory over shell-shocked Nacho Mama’s.
Verdi’s, who never led this game until the end, tied the game for the first time when Jon Thomas blasted a line drive two-run homer to center field in the seventh to make it 11-11. Nacho’s then went back up by two on an Ed Adrian single and thanks to a rare Verdi’s miscue, he was able to come around to score on the play to make it 13-11. It stayed that way until the bottom of the ninth.
Rob Barstow (four hits, two RBIs) started off the ninth for Verdi’s with a single, followed by a Thomas double, an intentional walk, a line out, and a sacrifice fly by Matt Minik (four RBIs) to cut the lead to 13-12. Dan Harrar followed with a fly ball that was ruled an error that scored the tying run, setting up Faria’s game-winning heroics.
Other Verdi’s hit leaders included pitcher Jim O’Toole and Michael Shone with three hits each, and Bob Greve with a pair of runs knocked in. Nacho’s was led by Bill Coyle, who tripled home a pair of runs in the first to give them an early 2-0 lead, with three hits and three RBIs, Bob Masulis (three hits, two RBIs), Matt Evangelista (three hits), and pitcher Dave O’Brien (two RBIs).
Dolphin Tiki 18 Speakeasy 12
Dolphin Tiki used early fireworks to open a 16-4 lead and were able to thwart a late inning comeback bid to claim the victory over Speakeasy.
Tiki scored five times in the first on RBI base hits by Sal Tidona, Brian Craig, Eric Jeanotte, and John Kelly sandwiched around a Ron Baden sacrifice fly. The next inning, Tiki picked up where they left off when Joe Rocco hammered a three-run round-tripper, followed by run-scoring doubles by Tidona and Baden that made it a 10-1 ball game. After Tiki extended the lead to 16-4 after four innings, Speakeasy showed some life scoring eight runs over the next two innings, capped by run-scoring hits by Laz Ferro and Scott Golan that cut the advantage to 18-12, but that’s as close as they could get.
Rocco also tripled among three hits and four RBIs to lead Tiki. He had help from Tidona (three hits, two RBIs), and Baden and David Falls (three RBIs each). Mike Reale, Terry Downs, and skipper Tom Vander Aarde all punched out three hits for Speakeasy, and Downs, Mark Whealy, and Tom Deangelo each plated a pair of runs in the loss.

Speakeasy 14 Verdi’s 12
Speakeasy battled back from a late deficit to defeat first-place Verdi’s and put an end to their three-game win streak.
Trailing 11-9 heading into the bottom of inning eight, Speakeasy erupted for five runs to take a 14-11 lead that they would not relinquish. After a leadoff double by Vito Iacovazzi, Mike Reale sent a long drive down the left-field line that barely eluded the glove of Verdi’s Jon Thomas and went for a two-run homer that tied the game at eleven. Three batters later, Laz Ferro singled home a run, Scott Golan hit a sacrifice fly to score another, and Craig Cunningham knocked in the final run on a single. Verdi’s scored once in the ninth on a Matt Minik double but left the tying runs stranded as the final two outs were recorded.
Iacovazzi led Speakeasy with four hits, including a triple, and three RBIs in the contest. Support came from Tom Vander Aarde with a triple and a pair of RBIs, and Golan, who also plated two runs for the winners.
Thomas had another huge game for Verdi’s with five hits, including three doubles. Dan Harrar blasted a three-run home run that gave Verdi’s a brief 7-5 lead in the fifth inning. Minik contributed two RBIs in a losing effort.
Dolphin Tiki 12 DaVinci’s 11
Brian Craig blasted a solo game-winning home run as Dolphin Tiki survived a furious comeback by DaVinci’s and prevailed in the tight contest.
Tiki built an early 11-3 lead on the strength of a pair of five-run innings. In the first inning, run-scoring singles by Ron Baden, Eric Jeanotte, Ricky Cuevas, and David Falls helped Tiki build a 5-1 lead. Then in the sixth frame, Tiki used an RBI single by Joe Rocco, an RBI double by Lou Marinaccio, and a run-scoring single by Craig to boost the advantage to a seemingly comfortable 11-3 score. But DaVinci’s had other ideas, scoring eight unanswered runs over three innings to even the score, thanks in part to a pair of RBI singles by Ed Seery and a two-run base hit by Dave St. Angelo. That set up Craig’s heroics in the bottom of the eighth inning that secured the victory for Tiki.
Dave Shultz also contributed a triple for Tiki. Joe Lazzarotti peppered the ball for four hits, Mike Gerace added three, and St. Angelo knocked in four runs for DaVinci’s in the game.
Nacho Mama’s 18 Salty Dog 14
On the strength of Ed Adrian’s six-RBI performance, Nacho Mama’s was able to outlast Salty Dog and pick up their second win of the season.
The infielder doubled home a pair of runs for Nacho’s in the second, blasted a three-run home run to right field in the sixth, and capped his big day with a sacrifice fly in the eighth.
Nacho’s trailed 11-7 going into the sixth, when they scored five times, on a solo homer by Bill Coyle, an RBI single by Frank Tedesco, and Adrian’s three-run bomb that gave them a 12-11 edge. After Salty Dog tied it at twelve, Nacho’s pushed across five more runs, on RBI hits by Paul Nussbaum, Matt Evangelista, Bob Masulis, and a two-RBI base knock by manager Todd Rogers that extended the lead to 17-12.
Nussbaum and Eric Phillips led Nacho’s with four hits apiece, and Masulis added three. Nussbaum, Coyle, and Tedesco each drove in a pair of runs for the winners. Jeff Robinson and pitcher Bob Ferreira both had three hits for the Dog, and Tom Polston knocked in two runs in the contest.

Pitcher John Nicholas hit a game-winning sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth inning, capping a furious rally that enabled Dolphin Tiki to knock off Salty Dog.
Salty Dog, who did all their scoring in the first four innings, held an 11-4 lead going into the fifth inning. Dolphin Tiki chipped away with single runs but still trailed 11-7 as they came to bat in the ninth. Dave Mayo started the rally with a single and one batter later, Eric Jeanotte blasted a two-run home run to cut the lead in half. Ricky Cuevas and Gary Revall (three hits) singled, followed by run-scoring hits by John Kelly (two RBIs) and David Falls (three hits) to tie the game at eleven. Nicholas then launched his fly ball to right center just deep enough to score the game winner.
Sal Tidona also contributed four RBIs for Tiki. Salty Dog got three hits from Bill Krausmann, Brian Ward, and Dave Johnson, and two runs driven in by Ward and Dan Gulick to lead their offense in the heartbreaking loss.

Sami’s 14 Snook Inn 8
Sami’s rode its 22-hit attack to a win over first-place Snook Inn.
Leading 7-5 as it batted in the bottom of the third inning, pitcher Ed Kingsbury (three hits and two RBIs) helped his own cause with an RBI single. One batter later, Jack Facciolo (three RBIs) stroked a run-scoring double. Sami’s would add one more run, good for a 10-5 lead. Despite trailing the entire game, Snook battled back in its fifth inning.
Steve Hemmerlein continued his strong hitting by ripping a line-drive three-run home run to center field as Snook closed within two runs at 10-8. But Sami’s responded with two power swings as it pulled away.
In its fifth inning, John Gross smashed an opposite field ground ball that rolled for a solo home run, his fifth-round tripper of the season. An inning later, Dave Schott (two RBIs) tattooed a liner just over the head of a Snook defender, resulting in a solo home run and a 12-8 Sami’s lead. Several batters later, shortstop Jon Wiseman, four hits and two RBIs for the game, ripped a line drive single, scoring one run. John Stuart (three hits) then capped the rally by booming a run-scoring triple, giving Sami’s a 14-8 lead it did not surrender.
The win for Sami’s ended its four-game losing streak. Despite the defeat, Snook remained in first place, getting hitting contributions from Tom Deater (three hits) and sub-Jon Krebs, who also had three hits, among them a solo home run.
Joey’s Pizza 17 Brewery 14
Joey’s Pizza exploded for seven runs in its final at bat, rallying to defeat Brewery in a ‘Rock ‘Em ‘Sock ‘Em affair as the teams combined for 35 hits and 31 runs.
Joey’s George Giacobbi was the igniter of Joey’s seventh-inning rally. He blasted a solo home run, his second of the day and part of a four-hit afternoon, cutting Joey’s deficit to three runs at 14-11. Two batters later, Todd Stigall (three hits) dropped a single into leftfield for another run, drawing Joey’s even closer at 14-12. The Pizza Men tied the game at 14 on a sacrifice fly and a single, setting the table for Tom Rensch. The Alaska native’s seeing eye single plated the go-ahead run and was his second RBI of the game. Manager Todd Whitney (two RBIs) capped the uprising by bouncing a two-run single down the leftfield line, giving Joey’s a three-run lead at 17-14. Pitcher Jerry Engel chipped in to the offense with two RBIs.
Jon Krebs led Brewery’s hitters with three knocks and two RBIs. One of his hits was a triple. Ray Capella (three RBIs) had Brewery’s signature swing. He boomed a three-run home run to leftfield in the sixth inning, part of a five-run Brewery scoring burst that ended with Green and Black leading 14-10. Brewery’s other contributors were Bob Armstrong (three hits) and Pete Oellrich (two RBIs).
Stonewalls 19 Sand Bar 9
Stonewalls Tom Gazzillo was a one-man offensive wrecking crew as he belted two home runs while driving in eight runs to lead the Men in Black to victory.
Gazzillo started his offensive juggernaut in a quiet fashion. His RBI single was part of a three-run first inning that gave Stonewalls an early cushion. In the third inning with the bases loaded, he launched a high drive to right centerfield field over the Sand Bar defense that resulted in a bases clearing grand slam, giving Stonewalls an 8-5 lead. But his power swings were not finished.
In the fifth inning, with Stonewalls leading 11-7, Gazzillo smoked a line drive to the gap in centerfield, good for a three-run home run and a commanding 14-7 Stonewalls advantage. Gazzillo’s concluding stat line was perfection: four hits in four at bats, eight RBIs, 10 total bases and a well-earned game ball. Other contributors to the Stonewalls offense included: manager George Lancaster (three hits and two RBIs) while Jim Dorey, Geoff Bentley, and Tom Breslin all had two RBIs each. Pitcher Steve Chasin had a triple.
Sand Bar’s offense was led by their fifth and sixth hitters, Bill Thompson and Kevin Smith. Each had three hits with the highlight hit belonging to Thompson, who smacked a triple. Jack Martin also had a three-bagger and drove in two runs.

Snook Inn 20 Brewery 13
Thanks to a mix of singles and extra base power, Snook Inn scored 13 runs in a three-inning span to eventually overpower Brewery.
Trailing 7-5 as it batted in the bottom of the third inning, Snook got busy. With a man on and one out, Karl Kann, who had two triples and four RBI’s, lofted an opposite field three-bagger, good for one run. The Snook would tally four more runs courtesy of two singles, a Brewery error, and a sacrifice fly which turned the two-run deficit into a 10-7 lead after three innings. After scoring three more runs in the fourth inning to take a 13-8 lead, Snook put the game on ice with a five-run fifth inning.
With two runners aboard, Jim Willert bashed a three-run home run to deep leftfield, upping Snook’s lead to 16-8. A pair of singles brought home two more runs, good for a commanding 10 run cushion for Snook. In addition to Kann and Willert’s extra base muscle, other contributors to Snook’s 29 hit attack included: Doug Stang with three hits; and the two RBI club of Dan Grace, Gary Menzies, and pitcher Neal Newhouse.
For Brewery, Rod Lashley paced the offense with three hits (among them a two-run home run) and three RBIs. Added support came from Bob Armstrong and Glenn Ahlquist with two RBIs apiece. Armstrong also had a triple, as did Chuck McAlpine and Don Palmer.
Stonewalls 15 Sami’s 12
Scoring in every inning but one and never trailing in the game, Stonewalls rode a fast start to its seventh win of the season over persistent Sami’s.
Leading 3-2 as it came to bat in the top of the second inning, rookie Will Smith (three RBIs) bashed a triple, upping Stonewalls lead to 4-2. Jim Dorey (three hits and two RBIs) had the other key swing of the inning with an RBI double, scoring one run. The uprising ended with another run-scoring single, giving the Men in Black a 7-2 lead. It was more of the same for Stonewalls in its third inning.
With one run in, pitcher Steve Chasin (three RBIs) looped a two-out, opposite field double, scoring two runs for a 10-2 Stonewalls advantage. Tom Breslin (three hits) kept the inning alive with an RBI single. Stonewalls added another run-scoring single for a seemingly comfortable 12-2 lead.
Sami’s answered back in its next at bat, scoring five runs, with key RBI swings in the inning belonging to John Gross (three hits and two RBIs) as well as Ed Kingsbury (two RBIs) as it cut its deficit to 12-7. Stonewalls recaptured a comfortable lead in the middle innings, thanks in part to a solo home run by manager George Lancaster (two RBIs on the day). But Sami’s resilience remained, thanks to outfielder Tim Rose, who capped a perfect three-for-three, five RBI day by stroking an opposite field three-run home run to help Sami’s pull within two runs at 14-12.
Stonewalls, however, closed the door on any further rally bids by Sami’s in its sixth and seventh innings at bats. Other spotlight hitters for Sami’s included Jon Wiseman with three knocks and Jack Facciolo who had a triple.
Joey’s Pizza 16 Sand Bar 13
Joey’s Pizza has a new moniker, the Comeback Kids.
The Pizza Men continued a week of improbable seventh inning rallies by again scoring seven runs in their final at bat, this time to rally and defeat heartbroken Sand Bar.
Trailing 13-9 as it came to bat in the top of the seventh inning, Joey’s scored its first two runs of the inning on the strength of two singles, a walk, and an intentional walk to George Giacobbi (two RBIs) and fielder’s choice that cut its deficit to 13-11. With the bases still loaded, up stepped Larry Locks (four RBIs), who hammered a line drive to rightfield, just past the Sand Bar defense, resulting in a grand slam home run, giving Joey’s a 15-13 lead. Pitcher Jerry Engel (two RBIs) then capped the seven-run rally with a pop fly RBI single, giving Joey’s a three-run lead it did not surrender. Joey’s had several other hitting stars including Todd Stigall, who had three hits and four RBIs, two of which came on a two-run home run in the first inning. Glenn Davis chipped in with three RBIs while Robert Stried had three hits.
The hit of the day for Sand Bar belonged to manager Mario Lucca (three RBIs). He drilled an opposite field low liner to rightfield that skipped past Joey’s defense, resulting in a three-run home run for Lucca, who beat the relay throw to the plate as the crowd roared in approval. Other contributors included Nick Kopley with three hits and Steve Levesque with three RBIs. Levesque, Joe Logisz, Jim Stewart, and Kopley all had triples for Sand Bar.
Joey’s Pizza 16 Stonewalls 14
This time, Joey’s Pizza did not need late-inning heroics to get a W, thanks in large part to their manager, Todd Whitney.
The skipper hammered the ball for three hits (including a triple) and four RBIs, none of which was more vital than in Joey’s sixth inning. With one run already in that tied the game at 11, Whitney scorched a liner to the gap in left center field, good for a two-run double and a 13-11 Joey’s lead. Following an intentional walk, Glenn Davis (two RBIs), who made several highlight reel catches in rightfield in the game, scored Whitney with a run-scoring double of his own, good for a 14-11 Joey’s lead. The Pizza Men concluded their second five-run uprising of the afternoon with an RBI infield single. Joey’s other hitting stars included Tim McKenna (three hits and two RBIs), Todd Stigall with three RBIs, and Hal Jurgensen, who chipped in with two RBIs.
Stonewalls signature swings belonged to manager George Lancaster and second baseman Geoff Bentley. Lancaster (three RBIs) plastered his third home run of the season, a three-run shot to deep right center field, that staked Stonewalls to an early lead in the first inning. Bentley, meanwhile, popped a two-run single into short centerfield in the fifth inning, completing a five-run rally for Stonewalls, giving it a temporary 11-10 lead. He also drew a bases loaded walk for his third RBI of the day. Other noteworthy hitters for Stonewalls included Bobby Williams and Tom Breslin with three hits each and Jim Dorey with two RBIs.
