Celebrating America Through Local Eyes: Micah Ramos

A Special Veterans' day series honoring local veterans and heroes

Local veterans and heroes will be sharing their thoughts on what makes Marco and America special by answering some patriotic questions. It’s our way to honor those whose dedication and sacrifices make our Island community shine.

Mica Ramos grew up in a small town in Indiana before relocating to Naples at age 10. Returning to Indiana at 18, she started a family and earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Indiana University School of Nursing. In 2010, as a widow with three children, she moved back to Florida and joined Physicians Regional.

From day one, she knew this hospital was the right place for her—the team quickly felt like family. The core values, compassion, and commitment to high-quality care are a continuous reminder of why she chose nursing, and she takes immense pride in being a dedicated patient advocate.

A few years after returning to Naples, she married her husband, Carlos, and they welcomed their daughter, Lily, who joined their blended family as the youngest of six children. At age two, Lily was diagnosed with brain cancer.

Throughout four years of treatment, her extraordinary strength and resilience deeply transformed their lives. Following her passing at age six, they founded Love Lily (Lovelily.org), a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting and comforting families affected by childhood cancer.

“Understanding firsthand the severe financial strain of a pediatric cancer diagnosis, we provide direct financial aid to help families focus entirely on their child’s care.”

Love Lily hosts several annual initiatives to give back. Every July, they deliver lunch to the dedicated staff at the children’s hospital where Lily was treated to express their enduring gratitude for their compassionate care. Each September, in honor of Lily’s birthday and Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, they host their annual “Lily’s Birthday Blanket and Friend Drive.” Because Lily always found comfort in having a blanket and stuffed toy nearby, they collect and distribute these items to bring comfort to other young patients.

“Over my 16 years with Physicians Regional, my colleagues have shown unwavering support and flexibility. These life experiences have shaped me into a leader grounded in compassion, patience, and empathy—mindful that everyone carries unseen challenges. Guided by these lessons, I strive to live each day to the fullest and make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.”

What is one thing that makes you proud to be an American?

I am proud to be an American because of the endless opportunities available to pursue our dreams and build a better future. I appreciate the diversity of our people and cultures uniting us and making our nation truly unique.

What does ‘freedom’ mean to you?

To me, freedom means the ability to live as I choose by making choices that align with my values and pursue my interests without fear. It is the privilege of self-expression and the opportunity to make my own path while protecting the rights of others to do the same.
