Calusa Garden Club Plant Sale

Posted

Calusa Garden Club of Marco Island will hold its Fourth Annual Plant and Thanksgiving Arrangement Sale on Tuesday, November 26, 2024, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM at the Marco Lutheran Church parking lot. The sale will feature over 150 plants grown by members and will spotlight the ornamental pineapple, a striking addition to a home landscape. The member will design beautiful fresh floral arrangements specifically for Thanksgiving, and Charlette Roman will sell cuttings from her vanilla orchids. This year, the garden club is pleased to present a booth by Everglades Native Designs, a local landscape design and nursery company that specializes in Florida native plants for your landscape.

Everglades Native Designs, LLC, a local company owned by Erik Jadaszewski,  has won First Place in the Marco in Bloom Home Landscape competitions for two of the last three years. Their website, evergladesnativedesigns.com, shows the beauty of home and commercial landscapes that use a variety of native plants. Native plants work well in Marco Island landscapes due to their ability to withstand our hot climate and adapt to both our dry winters and our wet summers. These plants require less water and fertilizer than non-native plants, and native plants are beautiful. Examples are beach sunflower, beautyberry, Fakahatchee grass, coreopsis, slash pines, and longleaf pines.

The best seller for the Calusa Garden Club sale in the last three years has been the Thanksgiving fresh floral designs made by the members. This year will be no exception as members are choosing their containers and planning their designs to rival those of past years. The colorful flowers are perfect for your Thanksgiving centerpiece or as part of your fall décor. To add to the festive atmosphere of the Plant and Thanksgiving Arrangement Sale, the club will have a spinning game of chance and sell 50-50 raffle tickets.

The featured plant for 2024 is the ornamental pineapple plant. This beautiful bromeliad has a pinkish swirl of leaves and pink miniature pineapple fruit that accents a planting bed. Although the ornamental pineapple is a true pineapple, its fruit is bitter. The plant is easy to grow and produces small pineapples and additional “baby” plants that are easy to remove and plant to increase the number of plants in the landscape.
