Barron Sweeps Lely

The Barron Collier Cougars had a bit too much firepower for host Lely on Thursday, August 27, sweeping the Trojans in three sets, 25-19, 22-12, 25-14. But coach Theresa Keegan is optimistic.

“We saw Gulf Coast on Tuesday,” Keegan said of the Trojans' 25-12, 25-16, 25-19 road loss. "So it was two big teams that we were seeing. And I think going into the week we were a little timid knowing we had two big teams against us.”

Gulf Coast (2-0) is ranked fifth in SW Florida and Barron Collier (2-2) is ninth.

"Against Gulf Coast we were holding back a lot,” Keegan said, "not scared but timid with our offense. What I wanted tonight was for them to swing so they could see that they are good hitters and they can hit against a good team. And that's exactly what they did tonight. The outcome didn't come out how we wanted, but our offense looked really good tonight."

Keegan looks forward to the Trojans (1-4) putting together a complete game.

“If we can just put our defense and offense together,” she said. “We will be really good if our serve-receive can be on while our offense is on. When all the pieces are together, we will be really successful. But it's early. That's what we're working on right now, gaining experience."

Keegan has seen three leaders emerge.

"Poppy Clarke, our libero Shannyah Bain, and our setter Addison Heinrich are my three captains. I just moved Shannyah up to captain. She has really stepped up as a leader. She works so hard. She does a lot on defense.”

Lely travels to Golden Gate (2-2) on Thursday, September 3. They host Immokalee (3-2) on Wednesday, September 9 at 7:00 PM.
